High Mileage Oil

Is it true that once you start using high mileage oil, you have to stay with it for the rest of the life of the engine?

There's almost no synthetic blend available in my area in Canada,only high mileage syn blend available.

Any experience with castrol gtx HM, max life or Mobil High Mileage?

No, it's a myth IMO, however to see the benefit of a high mileage oil you do need to stay with it.

A high mileage oil generally just contains a bit more seal conditioner, maybe a bit more viscosity and sometimes anti wear additives (depending on the brand).

Of all the high mileage oils, I think MaxLife is the best followed by Mobil 1 High Mileage. Mobil 1 High Mileage would most likely be superior under extreme high temperatures.

i run the SuperTech High Mileage and it has reduced consumption in my silverado with over 155k.Plan to stick with it till the end.14.63 for a 5qt jug...Cant beat that price!!

Mobil 1 10W30 HM has 1000 PPM phosphorus and 1100 PPM zinc.I don't know about the others.

Good oil but for 50 cents more I'd get the mobil super HM which is a synblend where as the WPP SuperTech High Mileage is only a II+ conventional oil. Cant go wrong with either!

I'm a big fan of High Mileage oils and I still consider Maxlife the king of them. That said a close runner up in my experience is the GTX High Mileage, a highly overlooked lube here but man it is a good one.

If you want thinner with a higher VI choose Maxlife, if you like thicker with a very heavy for grade HTHS choose the Castrol.

Interesting info, comparisons by brands. Which ones use sodium detergent additive? Are any almost clear in color?

I don't like dyes. I think Pennzoil High Mileage has caused discoloring in 2 of my cars engines. Nextgen Maxlife is a deep brownish redish color.

Shouldn't be any dyes unless you're talking about Royal Purple or something.

By my memory the GTX HM is a hair darker than Maxlife when you pour it in, shouldn't be anything other than variations in add packs, both are syn-blends.

OK I got the Valvoline at walmart but it's not too late. If there is an High Mileage oil that's almost clear like Valvoline Premium Conventional I will get it.

From my experience.. if your car has a leak and it is reduced by using a High Mileage oil, you need to continue using the High Mileage oil to prevent the leak. High Mileage oils help with the weeping real main seal in my 96 ZJ. But once I stop using the High Mileage oil the leak will go back to its previous (pre-High Mileage oil) state. Same issue with my 01 Camry and a friend's 02 325i

All of the Valvoline oils are very clear,Max Life included.

I just don't like dyes in oil. Current fill Nextgen Maxlife @ 4000 miles is now a deep reddish brown color on a white paper towel, I assumed Maxlife red jug was the same.

After the next run of Valvoline conventional I'll have to check the valve cover sparkplug seal. May have to go back to High Mileage oil if it starts leakin again.

Very true, I pointed that out as a disadvatage in a previous post and several folks then said it was not true. If your engine is a high timer and does not leak oil there is no point using an High Mileage oil and choosing the correct viscosity to reduce cold start wear is more important. Obviously if you have a motor with flat tappets then the Zinc content is worth considering, but there are other oils with sufficient Zinc.
The only time to consider an High Mileage oil is when you have leaks you can't fix and are not too concerned about the cold start issue.

I used the old Quaker State High Mileage SM with Slick 50 additive already pre mixed in it. used to use that exclusively in 10w30 flavor in my truck

Since then i've ran 0w20. 5w20. 10w30. 5w30. in Synthetic, Blend, Dino, and HM, no Ill effects.

Truck still ran its best on that Quaker State High Mileage SM and a Super Tech filter.
Sad neither are made anymore, lol
