High mileage oil?

Snake oil? Well, maybe you didn't have a problem which a high mileage oil could cure. As for me, Maxlife seems to have worked well. I've used maybe 1/4 quart in 1000 miles, where as before with QS winter blend 5w30, I probably would have used 3 times that amount or more. Somewhat anecdotal evidence, sure, but the oil sure has seemed to de something for my Accord's oil consumption. I am going to stick with this oil for as long as I have the car.

Not snake oil, but an alternative to "Energy Conserving" starburst oil. In the case of Maxlife, I believe it is a much better oil than All Climate and it has worked well for me.

If they are in the valve cover and act to stop oil from splashing through I don't think an engine oil has much to offer.

Seals that seal a spinning shaft or the valve seals are applications that are helped by additives in engine oil. I would not expect much from a seal that does not get too much heat and not much oil under splash or pressure.

I've had a high mileage oil, Valvoline Maxlife to be specific, actually cause a front main seal leak. Stopped using it and the leak went away. This was when the Maxlife oils first came out, so they may have changed the formula or something since then. Try it for yourself and form your own opinion. I'll never touch the stuff again.

I also have a SHO, mines a 93. The plug well seals do get a great deal of heat, they go between the head and the valve cover.
I have used Castrol High Mileage in mine since I got it 2 years ago. It didn't help stop the plug well leak or the valve cover leak, it did seem to cut down on oil consumption. I was useing a qt between changes at first.
I did, change the valve cover gaskets and plug well seals so that may contribute to the lower consumption.

The SHO engine isn't like alot of engines guys, you gotta take the intake off completely to change the gaskets.

jfug97, you can get by with takeing paper towles and drying up the oil in the wells and put some silicone around where the seals are till you can get them fixed.
If you got a free saturday, it's not too bad to change the seals. If you haven't you need to check out SHO forum. There is alot of info there and can help you with the work. You'll also probly be due for a 60k. I'm SHOdownTN on there.

I have read that as a HM oil cleans the engine, leaks can develop from cleaning off false seals of built up crud. Supposedly if you keep using it the seal conditioners somewhat restore the seal and the leak goes away. I have been using Maxlife for a couple years in one engine and my seals are weepy, but no drips. Not sure if they were that way before. From this site I understand Maxlife originally had some ester and then changed to PAO.

My sister stated using high milage oil and now the car uses oil.Never did that before. Its a 94 Camry with 150k.She will go back to her regular dino next change.Snake oil>its possible.I thought it would use less oil for sure but that in not the case.

My '96 Vic 4.6 consumes less oil on dino MaxLife, even less with Syn Maxlife, compared to my consumption using Super Tech and MoCraft oils.

Change your PCV valve to see if that helps.

What oil and OCI's were you using before?

That's entirely up to you, just use the oil you like................If the engine was rebuilt in mine and there was no leaks I would go with Mobil 1, mine has way to many miles to go that way now.

You got a ATX or MTX? Auto or manule

Islandvic> she uses Castrol 10w30 doing 3k to 3.5k OCI.She does mostly surface streets driving. She don't like the highway.Could be a pcv problem.

My 99 4.6 started using oil and after changing the pcv it was fine again. Was doing 3k OCI on that one using 5w30 Motorcraft. Will check it out. Thanks for info.I didn't think of the pcv.Thanks.

I'm now using 5w20 Mototcraft blend in my 05 Vic with 21k miles so will see how that holds up.I used it my 99 Marquis ounce in awhile and it was ok but for the 99 i liked 5w30 better as the car really called for 5w30.
