My car has 137k miles and its 16yrs old and cant decide rather to use a high mileage oil or not also if i use it will i be fine switching to a non high mileage oil or different brand as long as i stay in the recommended weight? Does high mileage oil cause problems?

If it wasn't burning or leaking oil, you don't "need" it.

It may help like buster said on the worn seal, clean up extra deposit, etc, at the expense of slight increase in cost and fuel economy.

^ should be yes. The additional seal conditioners could also help prevent future leaks. I'd use MaxLife or M1 in that order.

It appears that your mileage is already causing you problems. Your posting is in large, bold characters for no apparent reason. If you don't get this under control, soon you could be in for some real problems. This kind of problem could creep up on you and the results would be devastating.

Oh fellas...

Sometimes y'all need to remember, there's a difference someone's question between beatin' a dead horse, and someone's question being honest. Just because a person may have asked a similar question in the past, and that additionally similar questions have been previously dealt with, doesn't mean they don't deserve to be answered.

Everyone's learning abilities differ. And everyone's knowledge retention abilities also differ.

The OP's question here is honest, so giving him a dead-horse answer isn't fair.

If one uses an High Mileage oil, then reverts back to a non-High Mileage oil, typically there won't be any consequences. But, this depends on the initial condition of the engine. If the engine was a leaker/burner before using High Mileage oil, then one goes back to non-High Mileage, the engine may start leaking/burning more than it did with the High Mileage oil - however many erroneously say that switching back from High Mileage to non-High Mileage will cause more leaking/burning than the engine had prior to using High Mileage oil, but truthfully, for the majority of cases, that just isn't how it is.

On the other hand, some older engines might actually have it happen that way. High Mileage oils do contain a slightly higher amount of seal swellers. So, if the seals of an old engine leak a bit initially, and High Mileage oil helps reduce it, it could sometimes be possible for the seals to become more leaky (after going back to non-High Mileage oil) than they were initially.

The truth is that there just is no definitive answer. Every engine is different.

In your case, you say the vehicle in question is years old, so math says you've got a 1999 year vehicle.

Let me give you an example of a car that is a little older than yours:

My mother's 1996 Ford Explorer (4.0L Cologne OHV V6) - currently about 186k miles. It really never leaked much, and as far as I know, it's not a burner. She's had the car since the early 00s - we bought it when the car had about 90k on it. So, she's put almost 100k on it herself. But, she's a very easy-going driver, never harsh on the throttle. She babies it.

I have been changing her oil since I was 15 (I'm 21 now). I was interested in what you were asking in your OP myself, so one oil change I used Pennzoil High Mileage, and the next I used non-High Mileage Pennzoil. Using High Mileage slowed the leak quite alot. After reverting back to non-High Mileage, the amount it leaked did not change back to how much it leaked prior to using High Mileage; it stayed as slow as it was with High Mileage. Luck? Logic? Coincidence? Don't know. But it still doesn't leak much. We run about 5k OCI's on it (it has the old Ford OLM, which I don't believe the 96 OLM was "smart" - I think it just went by miles, and the manual says 5k miles for normal service). It's never had any major issues in our ownership of it, besides for one thing: it needed a new fuel pump around 180k - but that's just natural for that many miles.

So, OP, what you use is up to you. My advice is that if you're planning on using Mobil Super High Mileage now, that you keep using High Mileage for the sake of "better safe than sorry" - but nonetheless, if you do decide to go back to non-High Mileage, it may not leak.

It's people like you who call names but don't give backup.

Please. Point out where I used fallacy.

Don't get me wrong, I'm willing to learn from my mistakes...

But honestly I see none in my prior post.

So... humor me.

I would, could or might, but I would rather be safe than sorry, so I'm not sure if I should because then everyone will want me to edit their fallacies.

I would use high mileage in your case, yes. Valvoline MaxLife is a good oil, available in synthetic blend & full synthetic. Pennzoil High Mileage, Mobil 1 High Mileage & Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage are also good choices. The high mileage additives will condition your seals to prevent future leaks.

Yes, you can go back to a regular oil after using high mileage with no issue. Switch back & forth as much as you please.

Yea cause im not sure if it was leaking or consuming oil before as i just bought the car but figured for it being 16yrs old and 137k miles id go with a syn blend high mileage.

*Disclaimer: I am normally never a person to brag because I stride to be a humble man. But when people cross me my pride starts to show*

I didn't use a fallacy, bud.

So if you're gonna call me out, back it up.

If not, don't say anything at all.

By the way, just to show you how much of a pr!ck I can be when people say I'm doing something I'm not, or whatever...

Your line,

"because then everyone will want me to edit their fallacies."

Is a fallacy!

So don't try me. I'm a Capital Honors Student, currently a junior in college, with a 3.75 GPA.

I know whether or not I am using a fallacy. My prior post didn't use one.
