Whats the deal on High Mileage Motor Oil? I drive an 1989 Toyaota pickup truck with 190.000 miles. It runs strong, but I am wondering if it would be a good idea to help prolong the engines life by usuing these "High Mileage" formulations. You know thew claims they make-they are right there on the conatainer. If it IS a good idea, do I need to usew them exclusively, or can i alternate using the high mileage oil every second or third oil change to recive the benefits? thanks

If it dosen't leak or burn oil I wouldn't use them. But from my (limited) understanding, to gain real benefits from them, you need to use them repeatedly.

High mileage oils pack a more powerful punch than your average everyday motor oil. They have extra detergents for added cleaning ability, they have seal conditioners to prevent your seals from losing their pliability, and some of them (guess who?) even have synthetic PAO oils blended in plus 300 parts per million of moly.

All of what Merkava said, and I'll add that HM oils are closer to what our oils would be like were it not for CAFE.

Long live high mileage oils!

What type/grade/manufacture of oil are you using now?

Any leaks or oil usage?

Have you ever looked inside the valve cover via the oil fill? Varnish?

At 190,000 I personally would not change too many of my routines with oil changes if your engine is sound!

Lots of speculation with HM oils. Still haven't seen any long-time HM UOAs here.... meaning 100K to 200K of exclusive use. So what they do to seals in the long-term is unknown.... unless you believe the oil bottler's claims that no harm will be done to newer vehicles using it long-term.

I generally take any written claims like this with a grain of salt. Others here may believe otherwise.

What Merkava said...

Though, my $.02 on your final question is I would never solely use HM motor oils in an application. Their seal additives maybe overkill when used in concurrent oil changes, so you might want to alternate use of them in with conventional oils periodically.

Also keep in mind that not all HM oils are made with the same principle. Castrol and Pennzoil use thicker base oils in their formulations than the equivalent weight (i.e. Castrol High Mileage 10w30 is thicker than 'regular' Castrol 10w30) whereas Valvoline HM semi-synthetic uses an equivalent base oil and blends about 12-20% PAO synthetic oil to it...
