Just picked up a '91 Sentra SE-R, with an SR20DE engine, about 189k miles, and is clearly a VERY well used car. So well used that I bought it for $300.

The engine runs great. No idea what the previous owner was using in it. Its a revver that gets hammered quite often. I don't have any books for it so I don't know what oil its supposed to be getting anyway.

What would the oil gurus here run in such a vehicle?

I had a 1992 SER and ran 10w30 in summer and 5w30 in winter. I ran dino and occassionally syn-blend and changed it about every 4K. It never burned a drop and ran great.

Nice find! SWEET cars and quite the sleepers performance wise. I agree totally with pbm but if it ends up burning insane amounts of oil, I'd bump up the viscosity to perhaps a 15w-40 (summer only). I would definitely run a bottle or two of Auto-RX through it.

I'll keep that in mind. Thanks guys

Its a bit of a rustbucket but nothing structural. All cosmetic wheel-arch and doorsill type stuff.

I have the same car with just about the same mileage!

It has some leaks, but still runs strong and has yet to fail an inspection. I've had it since it was new, and I always used a synthetic in it (Syntec). The oil I'm using now is a 5-30.

I'm currently on the first "rinse" phase of a Auto-RX treatment for leaks. Hopefully that helps the leaks, and when I'm done with that I think I'm going to keep up with the A-RX maintenance and run one of the high-mileage dinos. (Like the free MaxLife 5-30 I got!)

nj300se....I'm very curious as to the cleanliness of your engine's internals after a lifetime of Syntec...how badly did it need the Auto-RX?

Welcome to the board.

1991 Sentra SE-R here as well
Running just past 213,000 miles.
Averaging right around 27 MPG

I ran Mobil 10w30 last summer
Switched to 0w30 GC during the winter
Now running Castrol GTX 5w30 and I am going to stick with 5w30.

I'd suggest sticking with a good oil filter (OEM in my case) and Dino Oil Castrol, Pennzoil, Motorcraft are all good.

Rev happy!!!

CBD...Lets say that I didn't know too much about oil additives until recently!

I'm doing the A-RX in an attempt to stop some minor yet annoying oil leaking. The repir cost is just not worth it. The internals are sludgeless although through ignorance, I dumped different "stop leak" products into the motor in an attempt to stop the leaking over the past several years.

I tried most everything.

From what I can see, the motor looks like it is somewhat varnished, but it burns 0 oil. I didn't really do the A-RX for cleaning as much as another attempt to stop the leaking.

My impression so far is the leak is somewhat reduced(based on a non-scientific oil-puddle volume observation)from a noticable stain to just a few drops overnight. AND, I'm only in the first rinse so I am optimistic for good results when I am all done. I also think I have gotten better "pick-up" when I mash the gas since the A-RX has been in. Its worth a shot!

Edited to add that I have a '92, not a '91 like I said earlier.
