HF star socket set

I picked up this set for $9.99 at HF as I needed one to remove the tail gate cable on my Dodge Ram. For the price they look and feel good. For my once a year use of a star socket these seemed like a good buy and of decent quality.

The old ones were from china and were junk. the newer ones are from Taiwan and are very good. make sure you get the taiwan ones. btw the craftsman ones are real bad.

I'm old enough to remember when Japan, and Taiwan were rubbish for making just about anything. For the most part they are now making quality stuff.

Did you use 20% off coupon on the flyer in the mail ?

They were on sale already. I seldom get to use the coupon as in most cases I buy something that is already on sale.

Some of their stuff has gotten much better and some is still junk. I have found their hex and star sockets to be pretty good so far. I used the set linked by the OP for some door striker bolts.

I have dealt with numerous star sockets and I find that only the premium brands get the job done. Generic Chinese ones crack, and cheap ones from the USA get rounded off.

That's a bit different from my experience. I've found that premium brands tend to crack and cheap junk twists. Rounding tends to happen only as a result of camming out because I was too lazy to grind the tip flat before using it for the first time.

FWIW - the 20% still applies on sale items unless specifically excluded.

You can use a coupon for items that are on sale, unless the item is one that's specifically excluded from 20% off coupons (compressors, tool boxes, etc.).

But, you can't stack coupons. You can't try to use a sale coupon for an item and then also use a 20% off coupon on the same item.

Before they set up the exclusions for 20% off coupons, you could get the 44" box for only $279 + tax. I paid that price and it was a steal.

I'll be lucky if I use each one of the sizes once before they put me under.

You don't need to use each of those sizes for it to matter, just using one once can make all the difference in the world. That said, it's very likely that even the softest Torx sockets will be fine for most uses if you grind/file/sand the tip flat.

Should you find one of them starts to twist, stop and get a fresh socket. Making a trip out to the store to buy a new socket can take less time than extracting a screw with a boogered up head. A fresh socket and an impact driver may well save you from going through your bag of tricks for extracting stuck bolts.

Yes, the Taiwan made Pittsburgh sockets are pretty good, but the pliers and screwdrivers at HF are still subpar.

I guess thats an advantage of a local store. You can see where its made and judge the quality.

I have those torx (star bits) and their hex bits. They wre pretty good quality IMO. I rarely use them but I have not had any problems. I was considering buying a nicer set made is USA but I have no complaints with these.

As long as you keep them out of the impact wrench or drill they will serve you well.
