to me anyways... Ive never seen this before. Had to purchase my 3rd window motor/regulator for my grand prix, so i went to rockauto.com for it. i threw in an oil filter just to see how it'd effect the shipping cost, and it actually lowered it, so i bought one of those too! and heres what i got. 1 filter minus 1 anti drain back valve. fyi its a 51040

i emailed rockauto and they said to just keep it, and they'll send me a new one at no charge

now for the fun part: since this filter sits completely vertical on my vehicle, would you still use it?

Sure enough specs for an adbv. Not sure Wix could tell you anything other than adbv left off.

Stuff happens.

I'm sure many will say not to use. Because of it's verticle (up) orientation, I'd say if you tried it and got no start up rattle (after intial start), good to go. But that's just me.

Depends on if you want to experiment, if it rattles swap out for one with an adbv. Only thing you've lost is a small amount of oil and some time.

Use it. I have a stash of Baldwin filters w/o the ADBV, and have been using them on my 93 Chevy for years without any problems. As long as it mounts verticle, you should be OK.

It's probably fine and just missing the ADV, but a free filter is a perfect specimen to cut open and see the quality of the unused filter! (and post pics of course)

haha i did that when i first got my dremel. (thats the penmanship of a dremel newbie) so it was right around the time i started cutting open filters. which would have been right around the time i joined this site.

i might shoot wix an email with all the numbers on the filter, just to let them know. im not gonna spend any of my money to send it to them tho. it will most likely get cut open and posted here. the only concern i have about it is where the ADBV is held is place, it also acts as a seal between those 2 pieces of metal, and that seal is now gone.

Yeah, don't know what else might be wrong with it. I'd cut it open just to see what's inside.

Somewhat surprised no one has chimed in with the usual, 'oh if this was a Fram orange can everyone would be screaming about the poor construction.' Oh wait, that's right it's not a Classic or Pure One.

Still think the adbv was just left off and as long as when you shake the can and it doesn't rattle, the coil spring is sufficiently holding the thread end bypass in place against the base and centertube. The bypass flange as shown here just holds the adbv in place against the base. Would be curious to know if it made any difference with that filter orientation, but I understand your concern.

At least they are sending you a new filter. I probably would have bought one at an auto store returning it with the one I got in the mail if they refused to replace it.

ADBV's work no matter how the filter is oriented.

I'm not sure I'd use any filter that was missing parts; critical or not. Since you're getting a new one.. cut that puppy open and observe

I think it would work OK as most of the particles would adhere to the filtering media. But it would not be able to perform up to standards for as long as one with a bypass valve. I bet it would be OK to 3,000 miles though.

But if it could be mounted with the opening facing the sky it would work as well as one with a valve.

Of course they do. But sometimes they are superfluous.
