Help with my STi

I think Amsoil is gonna get my vote, Ive been on Nasioc and im a member there and the opinions are too many too far fetched.

From Scottys Cocktail (a mix of like 3 gear oils) to running blends of Redline.

Im gonna try the amsoil, if I dont like it, I can dump it.

I have a Legacy...not a rocketship like an STi. I had SF's HDS-5 in the rear diff and front transfer case (it's an auto), and I just hit 30,000 miles on the fluid, so, I changed it, just like SF recommends. Only had enough to do the rear diff. Drove around a week until my order of AmSoil Severe Gear 75-90 came in, and I put it in the front transfer case. The decrease in whine under load is apparent. AmSoil SG is MUCH quieter than the SF HDS-5. It makes me curious to go ahead and change the rear diff. to AmSoil SG, to see if the rear diff whine goes away...but, it's so much quieter than the front case whine (maybe simply because it's further away from my ears), I'm not going to waste the SF HDS-5. But, I am curious!

BTW, the SF looked pretty darn good that I drained out...just slight discoloration, and what I'd call minimal paste on the magnetic drain plug. I'm guessing it was overkill to change it, but, that's what the recommendation was...so, I did it.

Vspec - Thanks - please order via my link. Thanks.

Titan - that is interesting. Any clue where the whine was coming from?

I'm running SF MTL-R as well and have been very happy with it. I ran Amsoil in my 97 OB Sport, 03 WRX and for a bit in my Forester. I used the old regular synthetic. I haven't tried it since they updated the formulas.

Please don't link to non site sponsors' sales sites. Thanks

Pablo, the whine was from the front transfer case. It wasn't loud before, but, if I let off the throttle while cruising, it would disappear, and as I got back on cruising throttle, it would come back. Just a quiet background noise, most people wouldn't even hear it. Anyway, the only thing I did was change the front transfer case to AmSoil SVG 75-90, so, that's why I assume it is the source of the noise. The rear differential in Subarus are notorious for a little whine of their own...it's still there...but, no AmSoil SVG will be going in it for another 30,000 miles, since I have new SF HDS-5 in there. (Although, 30,000 miles may only take me about 6-8 months!) I'll be curious if the SVG takes out the rear differential whine, too. Don't know that it even means anything...but, it is interesting that is disappeared!

Oh, it's an automatic...with a front transfer case. I'd bet the SVG is not spec'd for a manual, and that was what you were asking, right?

WOW - yeah phew.... because I don't
