Hello, My son has a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4 and he's down on his luck with a baby on the way so I'm going to buy him a set of tires as a gift, but I'm not rich so cost is a concern so just wondering his Jeep calls for P225/75R15 can I use a P235/75R15? as I can get a nice price from Walmart on these,I purchased a set of these for a Dakota I have since sold and I was very happy with them (Goodyear Wrangler Radials).
Any thoughts and advice is appreciated!

Sure. The speedometer will be off by about 2.1%. When it shows 60 mph, his actual speed will be about 61.3.

That's a nice thing you're doing.

As others have said, it's fine. If 225s are the OEM recommended size (or even not), it's perfectly safe to go up 10mm in width.

Probably won't hurt anything, but I would try to get something closer to the size, maybe a 235/70R15. Check out the tire size calculator at 1010tires, it's very helpful for these calculations: http://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Tire-Size-Calculator

Going bigger can mean less effective braking and acceleration, additional wear on transmission (if automatic) or clutch (if manual) and lower mpg.

for helping him out!

Discount Tire included these options in their list.
265/70-15
265/50-15
235/70-15
225/70-15
255/70-15
265/75-15
225/75-15
215/65-15
Some of those come with some caveats, but yours should be ok with the speedometer note.

I have added tire diameters to your table and indicated the stock size (Bold and Large) and indicated acceptable alternative in Green and unacceptable alternatives in Red.

Some other acceptable size alternatives are:

245/70R15 724mm (+0.7%)
255/65R15 713mm (-0.8%)
265/65R15 726mm (+1.0%)

Whoever compiled that list for Discount Tire must have been having a very bad day.

Of course, when choosing any alternative to stock tires it is important to assure that Load Rating and Speed Rating are the same or better than the stock tire.

Yes they're fine, I run that size on my stock Jeep Cherokee as well. Speedometer is within 1 mph.

235's are often used to replace 225's in the 15" version. The 235 has a much larger selection and really dosen't cause an issue being only slightly wider and slightly taller. I will probably do the switch when i need tires on my Colorado as they are the 225 stock size.

Wider isn't always better. Probably slightly worse performance in the snow and rain due to greater tread width.

This. Hard to believe people are even still running 225s anymore.

Jeep (and nearly everyone else) allows tire chains (for snow) on their smallest tire size, so you're just using the clearance for said chains. Don't let him run chains.

We had one of those. Takes 235 and the other option is 245 so no big deal. Not different enough to even mention. One thing to remember though about Walmart and Sams Club. If you want other than OEM tire listed in the owners manual they won't sell them to you. That was enough for me to kick them to the curb years ago. Guess what, I wanted 225's on my 2000 GC 🤔. Those 235's were pricy and it served s it was an odd size so not much to choose between

The width difference is 10mm or .394in. Wheel width may make a difference but you would never no it. Depending upon the individual mfg tread width may actually be narrower.

I have considered they may tell me this and I thought maybe I would throw the tires/rims in the back of my pickup so I could get new "dune buggy tires" you think they would go for that?
