+1. The AC repair is such a big liability that you're right.

Find a better car, even if it's someplace else in the country. As a project some elements might be fun, but there's just too much going on with this one for paying any more than scrap.

That's a 1000 dollar car tops.
And it's the kind of vehicle you don't spend any money on. Drive it til the doors fall off. Keeps total cost of ownership low and you'll get a couple years out of it.
Don't fix stuff on junk. Either live with it or leave it in a parking lot in the hood with the keys in it and take your licence plate.

1988 AC? You will have to do full retrofit; thousand to fix it.
