My '02 vt750 has 2800 miles on it and i am getting clutch slipping with the GN4 Honda oil (the red cap) at high rpm's when accelerating through the gears. The oil has about 1000 miles on it. The slipping is very minor and only does it when really going through the gears fast. It is a weird feeling. Almost like the tach goes up a few hundred rpm's then it grabs and takes off. Is this oil worn out? I was going to use Amsoil 10w-40 because it is readily available for $5.99/qrt. Otherwise i can get Bel-Ray, Torco, or Maxum. What about the gold Honda bottle (syntheic)?

At 2800 miles it is likely that the clutch is still good unless you are racing it or something.

If you are worried that the oil might have caused problems with your clutch fibers a couple of quick changes with something like Castrol GTX 10W40 should help clean them up.

As for oil to use in the bike I would use either Rotella T 5W40 or Amsoil 10W40.

If the slipping continues a set of Barnett springs wouldn't hurt.

Can you use a 20W-50? Thats what I would use then.

My '01 Honda Rancher ATV says it can be used if temps are over 32°F and that what I am using.

It is liquid cooled, so 20w-50 would be to thick. Why the Castrol GTX 10w-40 oil to clean it up?

I just went and got some Amsoil 10w-40 MC oil for $5.49 qrt. One more question, how are the Fram MC oil filters? I found them for $5.99 compared to the Honda one for $11.99 at the dealer. The only difference in looks is the Honda one has an o-ring for a seal, and the Fram has a flat gasket like the auto filters.

I think a short OCI with a good conventional oil might help rinse any of the left over moly out. Why Castrol? I have used it in the past and it seems to do ok. QS, Penz, Valvoline any of them will work for a rinse.

I'm using the Amsoil 10W40 in one of my bikes now and have no complaints so far. The clutch feels like it is holding well.

I highly doubt the clutch plates are worn. I would check the clutch cable for proper tension first and if that is OK then I would replace the clutch springs with either KG Clutch Factory or Barnett clutch springs. Stock Honda clutch springs are pretty weak.

At only 2800 miles, unles your riding the clutch, I would suspect it has just fallen out of adjustment breaking in itself. Adjust first if possible, and try it then.

Hey,

just to chime in here. My dad has a 97 Honda Shadow VT1100. The bike has a smidge over 3000 on the clock and running strong. He's using Mobil 1 15w50 and it runs just fine.

I see it this way. Even though his bike is liquid cooled, the fan I rarely hear come on and bike engines run much hotter by comparison to a car engine. Thing about Hondas is unlike Harley's (not bashing Harleys) Harley utilizes 2 or more fluids to lubricate diffrent components. Hondas, on the other hand, The engine oil lubricated just about everything except for the final drive fluid. The clutch and the engine are lubricated by the engine oil all together.

Check out the Shadow forum. They really know there stuff over there. Here is the link www.hondashadow.net
