Help me pick an oil.....SS Camaro

Another question about rings lining-up.

What's the probability of 24 rings lining up to pass blowby and oil?

What mechanism was forcing these rings to do that?

I can see ppoor installation practices and QC not paying attention to ring alignment.

There were two updates, both for different problems however. An updated ring package for the oil consumption issue, and an updated piston to help qwell piston slap.

The new ring package consists of a new oil control ring with greater tension (13lb vs 9lb) and a new 2nd Compression ring with a "Napier ring" design which is supposed to help scrape oil off the cylinder walls better.

The piston update reduces piston to bore clearance to keep the piston from rocking in the bore. It also has "polyner anti-friction" material on the skirts to prevent scuffing with the tighter fit.

I personally think both issues are somewhat overblown, none of the local LS1 owners I've talked with even mention either problem. Granted thats a fairly small sample but it goes to show the problem isnt as prevalant as some would like to believe.

IMHO the LSx series motors are awesome despite their minor flaws. They are super smooth (for a pushrod engine) plus 420-430hp to the wheels is not uncommon at all with a heads/cam swap.

There are two down for performance upgrades at the Race Shop in town,will take a look see tommorrow and send you a message.

I don't think it would be practical to rework a piston like that.Also no telling on the tolerances as well from a mass produced piston like that.A number of things can cause rotation of the rings,I will send you a complete private message on this subject as it has been brought to my attention the prior post has been swiped and posted on another board and possibly changed a bit? I posted to help our members,not another boards so the topic ends here for me

Other than the info provided to me that I merely computed was .002 off on the rod lenght which is meaningless as well as small differences in the bore and stroke. The engine remains near square with some problems it seems in unusual bottom end wear as well, seen in engine oil analysis. GM and there fulcrum style rockers rated at 1.5 ratio came in often from 1.42 to 1.47 on the same engine.Also I will not ever believe they can make a rod center to center exactly 6.098 as referred to as the official spec on this "other" forum. That would be called blueprinting.Never saw a blueprinted mass production engine from GM? A ZR1 engines internal parts list price reflects some nice parts though.

The LS1/6 use 1.7 ratio rockers with a needle bearing fulcrum. Very similar to an aftermarket roller rocker only without the roller tip. I would hope since these pieces require a little more effort to produce they should be more consistant than the usual stamped steel POS rocker.

FWIW they also switched from the traditional stud mounted rocker to a pedestal style (non-adjustable I would assume).

I'm sure you've heard this 100x already but when they say the LSx engines are completely different than a traditional SBC they arent kidding. The only carryover parts are the rod bearings and the hydraulic roller lifters.

Jason, I do understand the differences in the 1970 LT1,the LT4,ZR1, L98 and LS1 Chevy engines. I used the rocker ratio only to show the partial quality control problems from GM in the past and to pound home that I don't think they can keep that rod lenght in limit.

The only problem I have with any of them is you cannot get 6+ small blocks in a 19ft Dragstar,,not a typo,Dragstar. I will stick with the little 632's and larger motors

Little 632? Um.. I think you need to send me one of these little motors for testing purposes

I'm sure it would make a great car motor with a few modifications to the engine bay. Plasma cutter anyone?
