Now, I'm coming to the realization that usually black/dirty/filthy results from too long of an OCI, leak, or other engine related problems.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but maybe just engine design too? (e.g. cars with turbos, cars w/engines where the oil undergoes large changes in temperature from the valvetrain to the sump, etc....) Maybe some other stuff too. Not saying that I thought synthetic didn't have ANY benefits, but in your case (lots of very long trips, relatively moderate OCI, concern over cost), I think a quality conventional or synthetic blend with a good price would be a better match, that's all. Just an opinion though...

Agreed - also I agree with a lot of other posters - conventional and blends are becoming better and better every day. The gap between conventional and synthetics has closed over the past 10 years.

In engines that arn't turbo'ed and high performance - dino/blend should do just as well as synthetic on a 3-5k oci. The advantage of synthetics = longer oci and possible savings if you really run the oil a long time.

In turbo'ed and hp engines - synthetic's ability to withstand high oil temps 230F+ without breaking down is a big plus.

The questions I have now are: Can synthetics keep your engine cleaner? Are synthetics "slippier" than conventional thus allowing for better MPG and wear?

Those are the questions...
