lots more fun using good lubricant's than changing out dirty oil, Amsoil used with Amsoil air/oil filters will last 20thousand miles with no problems.
Amsoil= (PAO) Polyalphaolefin based lubricant's
Castrol Syntec formula= GroupIII crude oil (hydroisomerized)petrolium base stock
Mobil1= same groupIII base
most All Synthtics sold by Conventional oil companies= GroupIII base oil
and sell it to you for (PAO)lubricant prices
See? Thats the question - "lots more fun using good lubricants" - How much more of a benefit is using say Amsoil 5w30 over Havoline 5w30 in a 5,000 mile oci? Is there a benefit? Seems like to me that the only benefit of Synthetics = longer OCI and higher heat tolerances in performance engines.
My theory is this though. Take 2 engines: 2.2L Ecotec w/ dino and a 2.2L Ecotec engine w/ synthetic. If you throw a handfull of dirt in each - both engines will blow up or die. So, regardless of what oil you got in there the real issue is contaminents. So, cheap insurance & longevity for your vehicle = short OCI. So in my opinion and tastes I prefer a short OCI. In terms of synthetic vs conventional/dino - I don't see an advantage of using synthetic over conventional in a 5k oci in an economy (non-performance) engine.
This is the conclusion that I see in this thread. All/any comments welcome.

Doesn't engine cleanliness = 400,000 miles? Well, at least engine wise. I think though that the priority would be engine cleanliness. 400k probably won't happen because the car will fall apart by then.
Short OCIs seem to make sense to me (described in my above post). 5,000 miles = short? I've always done short OCIs since I bought the car. I made it to 7,500 miles once with a good UOA on Castrol Syntec.

Changing conventional oil at 4-5k your engine will be clean with no issues.
Now, make sure you do (I know you already know this.. But for the new people) maintanence on the PVC system, airfilters and such.
I've got almost 300k on a 1986 VW jetta which has seen fram filters and anything that was on sale oil. Mostly Valvoline and Havoline with Pennzoil and Qs thrown in. (and thats using alot of older spec'd oils like API SH and older)
Runs great and clean as can be.
Had a 99 Taurus which was apart twice to the block in 108k miles. The valleys and heads looked like new. Nothing there. The car was a rent a car for it's first 21k miles (so you know its oil was changed with the best oil every 3k miles

In the summer of 2001, one of my co-worker's had a 1990 Jeep Cherokee. At had over 300,000 Miles on the clock. There was a good bit of varnish in the engine. The dipstick also looked nasty.

ASL - I think you are right. I believe, though, that with any oil (synthetic or not) if someone drives it too long they'll sludge up. Yes, Synthetic would last longer.

I have plenty of well maintained engines here for inspection, all had quality API certified oils changed every 3/4 thousand miles and all have plenty of burnt certified oil around all the piston ring land area.
most all the engines I have, have caked on varnished
API certified oils still stuck to them that need to be cleaned off.
I have used Amsoil for 7 years and never seen sludge even after 25thousand miles and upon engine inspection the parts looks as if it was polished and cleaned as new.

Also flows better in the cold.
What really bothers me about Amsoil, is that I switched a high mileage car over to it. Amsoil said not to worry just go 25000miles/1yr on my first interval. I asked them over and over. The said not to worry. 11000miles later there was rust forming on the dipstick, oil consumption went though the roof. I now understand that the oil was dirty. I have been changing my Amsoil every 6000 miles with no troubles.

I want the Mobil 1 and Amsoil you drain outta that car. I could justify a 5K OCI with that! After seeing what Dino looks like when cold, oiy-vey, I wannt dump out the Havoline and replace it quick! Your 3K syn will do the trick!
