Hi, 2 months ago I bought a 2005 Ford Taurus. I have noticed that the transmission shifts hard from 1st to 2nd gear when I really give it the gas. When I accelerate slowly, the shift is smooth. None of the other gears shift hard. I had a local transmission shop run it for codes, there are none. They weren't too sure about the cause but they just did a brief glance. Any ideas? 140k miles on it, i have change the fluid and transmission filter within the past two weeks. Thank you

Assuming it's got the right fluid in it they are usually just like this.

A fluid change might help some but my 99 Taurus did the same thing sort of would shift rough 1-2 occasionally but not on command. I used a 50/50 mix of Mobil 1 ATF and Mercon V which I think helped me some.

I did end up selling it around 150k with the original transmission due to the brake lines rusting through.

I never dropped the pan on it I used suck and fills through the dipstick tube

I used motorcraft mercon V, what the manual recommends. Is the accumulator spring easily accessible or dies it involve taking the transmission out of the car?

It would require you to take out the transmission from the car, remove the valve body cover, valve body assembly/oil pump, and then the chain cover. It's not worth it if it is indeed that problem.

and to cover other possible causes: could also be a fault with the intermediate clutch. Hard to tell exactly what causes that symptom before it fails without taking it apart. Sounds more like the accumulator area to me (spring, piston, seal) but the IM clutch is a possibility. These are not robust transmissions though much better than the previous series: do a search of your local craigslist for vehicles under $800 (likely non-running), and you should see a few Tauri, Windstars/Freestars with trans problems.

Also I hate to say it, but did you check the fluid level? There's also a vent that tends to get blocked and spew extra fluid. Because you just changed the fluid, you might not have checked it when it was properly hot.

Classic sign of a clogged air filter, dirty MAF, dirty butterfly plate on the TB.

Check that out in parallel to whatever you are diagnosing on the transmissions, transmissions are generally bullet proof across the board, check elsewhere.

My '05 Taurus had the same problem and would set an occasional random misfire code and would idle erratically on the first start of the day. In my case it was the approx. 2"rubber o-ring on the EGR attenuator body, which is attached to the left rear of the upper intake manifold, and caused a vacuum leak. I checked for a leak by using carb spray on it while the engine was running and found the problem right away. I got the o-ring at the dealer for 12.00. Head-scratching problem solved, thanks to the TCCA. Hope this helps.
