Heavy Duty Motor Oil

This is more of a curiosity question.

I bought some Chevron Delo LE 5w-40 synthetic the other day. The label says:

Heavy Duty Motor Oil
Aceite Lubricante Para Motor a Diesel

The Spanish part translates to: Lubricating Oil for Diesel engines

So are we to assume that a motor oil classified as Heavy Duty is formulated for diesel engines?

Genereally that is the case, but really the brand already tells you that. Delo is Chevron's diesel engine oil line just like Delvac is Mobil's and Rotella is Shell's. The ratings are what really tell you (CJ-4 in this case is a diesel approval and the fact that the passenger car approval is a little outdated).

SM for gasoline engines - approved

Mix fleet oil where if your vehicle requires any of these specs (or above), you are fine.

This is the reason we like Rotella T6 since it is good for any of our gas engines as well as diesel. I will check out the Delo option now.

To take things a bit further, I use heavy duty oil (Shell Rotella) in my motorcycle. It doesn't have the energy saving properties of passenger car oil that can interfere with a wet clutch.

The best part is its cheap and has a robust additives package. Branded motorcycle oil can easily run $10/qt and I don't know what you would gain.

also, what is your bike spec'd for? (10/40 I'd presume)

Thanks for the replies.

CJ-4 says it all. I just found it curious that the Spanish wording was not a direct translation of its English counterpart.

I've always used Rotella 5w40 synthetic or Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 in my 2006 VW Tdi PD. I thought I would try Delo 400 LE. From what I've read over at Fred's Tdi page, folks have has good results with this brew also.

I think it's the conventional 15w40 that comes in gallon jugs. The bike has a 650 V Twin that takes 10w40 from the factory but permits 15w40 for the 100+ temps I ride the bike in during the summer.

I use the same 10w30 HD CJ-4/SM syn blend oil in my just about everything but my newer Silverado pickup which gets a 5w30 full syn. Zero turn lawn mower, portable generator, John Deere Gator (gas version), compact tractor, semi truck, etc all get the same 10w30 HDEO.
