Heat resistant gloves for changing oil

Just use 0W20 and change it cold. I've done this at 20F temps and it comes out just fine.

We poor ramp and jack stand monkeys have to endure limited approach angles to everything we touch.

On a lift you'd have more directions from which to reach and clear.....fast. DON'T burn baby burn (clever?)

An oil soaked leather glove or oil soaked oven mitt? Yukville. Let it cool down a bit. It'll drain just fine.

Cheers

It's another one of those Merk threads, lighten up people

CKN, you use logic.

Merk is not.

but it makes for fun threads and we regular guys learn something new from the guys trolled/fish-hooked by Merk.

Yes I do.

There is always oil left in valleys, depressions and pockets in the block/heads. You'll never get it all out.

Take a good look at the reality of the situation and do what the rest of the world does.

I have always used leather gloves. If its too hot for that, it will have to wait.

Dude...take the blue pill....in fact take two of them.

With the thinner 0/5w20/30 oils today, I see little reason to change it at running temperature. I run my engine just long enough to drive onto the ramps. The oil filter is warm and I remove it with a leather glove. Ed

Why not get a size or two larger rubber gloves and wear some mechanic gloves under. They're more form fitting than garden or other work gloves, so you should be able to get the rubber ones on over top.

I change my oil fairly hot and find regular kitchen gloves help a bit. They aren't the greatest for dexterity though.

I wouldn't want to ruin leather gloves by getting them soaked with used motor oil, and 2 layers of gloves might keep your hands cooler but would be even more difficult to work with. Used motor oil is a carcinogen and getting gloves soaked with used oil (and then using the gloves for other purposes) would prolong the skin contact. I don't worry about occasional short term skin contact - but I do wash up well afterwards.

I change my oil with bare hands, been doing it that way since 1958, have yet to have any issues other than at 72 it's getting harder to get under the car!

Oh Ya, I let the engine cool off some first.

I loosen the plug with the socket wrench, then add a long extension to back it out. Keeps the hot spray off my hands. Let it drain while the filter cools enough to grab.

Yes but I can't remember which type of glove I was using.

At least I'm draining it hot! I didn't know before starting the this thread that half the guys on this board are girly men that drain the oil cold.

Thanks; but if you're not in a hurry you could let it drain overnight and get the same effect, without taking a chance on burning yourself.
