Heat resistant gloves for changing oil

I bet you could use leather gloves, never tried it though and I don't take any responsibility if something goes wrong.

Personally, depending on the vehicle if there is any chance of you dropping the filter on you I would just do it when the oil is warm. On my truck the only way for me to get at my oil filter is to lay underneath and unscrew it. It happens to be in between the ac compressor and the frame, so I can only hold onto it with one hand and it really wouldn't take much to have an entire quart of oil land on my head. Hasn't happened yet, but 200 degree oil on my fac and I bet I won't be good looking anymore after that. I can do it from the top, but I feel I'd be more likely to drop it.

I'm curious why....waiting until it cools down won't have an effect on anything.

Yeah, but there's still slot of oil in the top end of your engine that hasn't finished dripping down yet anyways so it's probably the same either way.

I usually change oil hot, but often I have also changed it cold.

Try dishwashing gloves, you can wear nitrile gloves underneath them as well for additional protection.

I drain it hot with the use of a Fumoto with the nipple and a hose attached to it - no splash or wind spray. I let it drain while it cools enough to grasp the filter.

Not exactly your hot hot hot solution and it does take more time.

What a useless thread. No matter what you do you cant get all of the "dirty oil" out. I don't know why (given a choice) why anyone would want to crawl around underneath a hot car. This is especially dangerous if you don't have a pit or rack to put your car on.

Do you REALLY THINK that you motor will last longer getting more oil out when it's hot?

If you do you may want to explain the theory to the rest of us.

Yes I do.

I use the black throw away gloves from Harbor Freight. I pull the drain plug, and an hour later change the filter. By that time I can usually get the filter off with no issue. If it's still hot I use a rag or a piece of sandpaper if the filter is too slippery to hold.

Wrong!!!!!!
You can wrap your lips over the drain plug hole and s-u-c-k really hard!

Right! I always did that.
