Headlights not turning off when engine off

The headlights don't turn off when the engine is off, if it was not for my neighbor the battery would have drained.
I checked the fuses and relays and they are just fine, should I be looking for something else in addition to the fuses & relays
Its the Highlander that has this problem w/ the lights.

I presume it has automatic lights and it was left in Auto mode?

Unfortunately my vehicle doesn't have an Auto, its manual.

They are probably wired to be that way. Every car Ive been in you could turn the headlights on with the engine off.

You're saying that no matter what you turn the switch to, the headlights stayed on until you disconnected the battery?

Is there a headlight relay? Relay contacts can become welded closed, so the relay does not turn off the load when it is supposed to.

Wouldn't it just be easier to remember to turn off the lights when you get home?

In 30s of locking the vehicles the lights would turn off - this is how most vehicles with manual ON/OFF of headlamps work.

Okay. This was not in OP
Are you saying before that this vehicle would shut off the lights X seconds after locking it?
And that is not most vehicles. The only ones Ive used that do that have auto lamps.

You'll have to describe the problem more clearly. You say you don't have auto headlamps and that they're manual? So you turn the headlamp switch to on and they don't go off when you turn them to off? Or are you expecting them to go off when you turn off the engine?

No, it isn't. Most vehicles with manual on headlights, you can turn them on with the vehicle off and they will just stay on until the battery dies.

For vehicles with Auto headlights, this is typical behaviour. The lights come on when needed, and turn off after the vehicle has been shut off and sat for a brief period.

OK. Let me rephrase, the lights are turned ON manually.
When the was engine is shut off and locked, in 30s the headlights turn OFF upon locking up the vehicle.
Thank isn't happening forcing me to manually turn OFF the lights.

Thats better. Now I understand.
I would guess it doesn't know the doors have been locked
However, thats only a guess.
This sounds like an electrical gremilin thats gonna send you down a rabbit hole. If it was me, I would pull the wiring schematics and start reverse engineering how its wired.
That behavior, I guarantee there is a some sort of computer making the decsion on when to turn/off the lights. Its not getting the right input. Therefore, you need to find out what input it is missing.
Or as someone suggested, it could be the lighting module itself. Dont know, would have to check and make sure its getting the right signals before condemning it.
Simple solution would be to just remember to turn off the lights.

Just shut them off manually, put a note on the steering wheel until it becomes habit.

I have auto-on/off lights in my '18 Highlander and they stay on for the period of time I set in the display unit in the dash. (Currently set to 30 seconds). Maybe try changing this time to something else and putting it back to 30 seconds. Maybe corrupt data in your body computer causing the problem? (if equipped in 2006, not sure about that era)

If it's more of a manual system then the computer is most likely forgetting to tell them to turn off for some reason. Maybe a simple battery disconnect for a few minutes will cure this?

Headlights should turn off automatically when the driver's door is opened. Otherwise try pressing the lock button on the key fob twice.
