Helping a friend pick a shotgun for home defense. Narrowed it down to two Mossberg shotguns. Series 590A1 which comes in several different offerings. Both 20" barrels [he doesn't want the 18.5" version], one with Ghost Rings, the other with XG Ghost Rings. Lets hear it from the Shotgun experts, I like the XG Ghost Rings. Thanks.

Can't go wrong with a Mossberg, especially the 590. How much would he be paying? And why no 18.5" barrel? 20" is pretty long in tight quarters. Well, so is 18, thats why I like my 870 with a 14" barrel or my KSG to greet unwanted visitors with. Not familiar with XG ghost rings. I prefer a tritium front bead only on home defense shotgun for its quickness. Don't have to take time to line anything up. Or better yet, a light/laser combo. Put the red dot on what ya want to hit AND see your target.

Mossberg is the correct choice.

My vote is for the 20 inch, with the OG ghost ring, not the XG. 20 inch has 3 more rounds in the tube. The OG ghost rings are very durable. If you want to put a dot or optics later, the XG has the advantage of the rail. You can add a rail with the OG sights, but it takes some special work.

Why does he not want a short version? May as well buy a standard SG otherwise (I have 3). I also have the pistol grip Mossberg - and they are not pleasant to practice with. In hindsight - I'd probably shop the shortest shoulder fire SG.

Don't overlook the IWI Tavor TS12 and the Siaga 12. I have both and they are both excellent with the TS12 being the shorter overall package.

The nice thing about the TS12 is that you can treat the 3 drums as different mags, like one could have beanbags or rubber slugs then one could have bird and one could have buck.

He wanted the 20" barrel version vs. 18.5". He wanted something quality, that could he could buy another barrel for. He's about 5'10" 175-180 lbs. He has fired my 12 gauge with #8 shot and slugs w/o too much problem, those are 26-28" barrels. It was the sights he had questions on.

If you have a 20" and a 18.5" shotgun you could lend him, have him walk through his house (ok I'll say it, unloaded), even better at night, and see how much the shotgun's length matters to him.
I have a 500 Persuader, a 590, a Maverick 88 Security, and my go to, a KSG all for home security. All will do the job effectively, but it's the one you train with that will do it the best.

I'm sorry but sights on a HD-SG is the priority?. I used to hunt geese in the fog with an 870 - and would paint a 2" band with orange paint near the end. Now we need sights for blasting someone point blank?

What I should have added was knowing him he might buy a slug barrel in time, and he might even set it up for trap. In which case I won't be lending him my 500. ;)
