I picked up 54 quarts for about $1/quart. I plan on using it in a 4cyl 2008 Rav4. The Rev4 is coming from my aunt in Texas, original owner. Mileage is around 48k. She's a short tripper. Planning a 2k, then a few 3k OCIs looking for 5k ultimately.

I've never used a Havoline oil. Looks solid on data sheets. What's your experience?

Havoline is a very good oil made by Chevron. It should easily do 5K OCI even in short trip usage.
Where are you getting it for $1 a quart?

I used them before no issues when they are on sale on around less 4k miles around 4-5 months OC.It's getting harder to find a 1 $/quart now a day's.I just pick up 8 quart mobil full sysnthetic for 2$ a quart at autozone the other day, next is kirkland at 3$/quart equivalent if I needed.

Havoline is great oil. I picked up a few HM 5W20 boxes a couple years ago -works p!ssah.

I also agree on skipping the 2K changes. I'd go right to 5.

I was looking for a safety net of cleaning out is all. Sounds like skipping an initial 2k is warranted.

I went to look for the thread...there was a post on a Wally World where a link to 3pk of 6 quarts was about $17 and free shipping. Can't beat it.

I apologize for the laziness. I'm in Tampa tanking up and eating like a savage before the Bills n Bucks game with the kids.

Here's my animals. I created em and it's my fault 🤪 10, 13, 15. We have lean 🎄 but travel often. Those are the memories they remember, not some B S toy.

why not fly to texas to get the aunt’s rav4, check and change if not yet done: tires & alignment, oil, air & oil filters, brake, coolant & tranny fluids; drive home, maybe change oil on return but then done until 5k oci? road trips with a purpose are fun.

as for the game, brady again pulled it out in the clutch, as is his way. will be really interesting if super bowl is pats vs. bucs...

This ^^^^^^^^^^

Havoline is a great oil made Chevron. Have run it many times in my Nissan Altima VQ.

You have a good oil, at a good price.

It's the new API SP stuff I assume, or some older SN/SN+ stock?

What viscosity grade did you get ?

I'm not worried, just curious.

I'm having a hard time understanding the whole "Synthetic Blend" craze? I can understand people not wanting synthetic in certain applications. And others not wanting dino based oils any longer. I myself am in that group. Personally, I think the full synthetic oils are noticeably better performing. From both a lubrication and longevity standpoint. And well worth their additional cost.

But I'm not getting this whole "blend" thing? To me it's a bit like blending half Nutrasweet, and half sugar in a cola. You get the benefit of neither. And the bad side of both.

And if it's cost, it's false economics. Look at the overall operating costs of a modern vehicle today. Purchase price, depreciation, insurance, licensing, fuel, maintenance, and repair. And the measly few bucks you're going to save on utilizing a "synthetic blend" motor oil, are all but microscopic to non existent.

Planning a 2k, then a few 3k OCIs looking for 5k ultimately. Why?

Frankly, to make me feel good! She keeps up on maintenance so I do not expect any sludge but I do expect varnish. Nothing in this crankcase except oil. Shorter OCI, cut open filter and inspect. I realize it is not scientific but it gives me my own personal baseline with a new (used) car.

Flip side, the 08 Rav4 4cyl has had many reports of oil burning. I'll never know from my aunt. She's a bring it in 3k, pay the bill, be done for another 3k. I can assure you, she has not checked the oil on any vehicle in 30+ years. If it is a burner, I may not be doing any oil changes! Just fill and change filter every now and then. I'm hopeful it is not the case.

That was the original idea. School gets in the way. We miss plenty of school for sports and travel like the Tampa trip. It would be a fly-in, pick up vehicle and head back. 1600+ Miles (24hr straight through) with no real time to enjoy towns/cities driving through isn't much fun. Then the cost comes in. $1200 to have transported TX to NY. Flights for the kids and me alone are more than that and add gas, tolls, food, etc.. Just didn't work out well on paper.

The game was a great one. After many Buffalo, New England, and Steelers games, it sure was nice to need sunglasses for a game in December! Sunset over the stadium was beautiful. Had to go to the top and snap a pic. Tommy Terrific! Gotta feel for Bill's fans. Patriots kill you for about 20 years with Tommy; finally, he is in another conference; Patriots draft Mac and here they are! Pats hurt you with a 3 pass win in your own stadium! And your very next game is Tommy and he pulls a last-minute, overtime win which sinks your season.

I use a lot of synthetic blends / semi-synthetic oils, for me they are a lot cheaper than full synthetics, about half price. I know in North America (NA) the price difference is much smaller, so I can see why they don't make sense in NA.

I assume most cheaper full synthetics are probably Group III only, I'm not an expert here, but I believe Group III typically only comes in thinner base oil viscosity grades, such as 4cSt, 6 cSt and 8 cSt (KV100). With GTL being mostly just about 4 cSt. So Group III and GTL is a natural fit for stuff like 0W16 or 0W20.

However Group II is available in thicker base oil viscosity grades, such as 10 cSt or 12 cSt. This makes it at home in thicker semi-synthetics. Hence the large amount of 10W40 semi-synthetics with Euro A3/B4 ratings sold in Australia and New Zealand. Cheap but good oils.

Of course Group IV (PAO) can be thick or thin, so it makes excellent but more expensive full synthetics of every type.

Still, I don't have a problem with a 5W30 or 10W30 semi-synthetic, with a KV100 of about 10 or 11 cSt, and a deft mix of a thin Group II and a thick Group III, they sort of make sense to me.

SN+/GF-6A. This engine would be fine on older stock as well.

5-30 works pretty well for my climate here in NY. Coldest extreme temp at my home was a -9F but that has been very rare over the 17 years I've lived here. We have a few cold snaps but 20's to 30's are much more common. Summer extreme heat is mid 90's.
