The 5/40 oils

Is this a ā€œthick vs. thickerā€ thread? 🤣

If OP drives more than 12k mi per year, I think he’d probably save money in the long run installing an Amsoil BPK (@Pablo) with the 110 size filters to add a few quarts of capacity, and changing oil & BP filter at 12mo intervals. Certainly won’t cost any more than the current plan @ 3k intervals and arguably provide better operating conditions for the oil…

I agree… šŸæ

Not sure that anything (any oil brand or weight) is going to stop oil consumption at 300,000 miles. Even so, in most cases, the car falls apart around the engine.
It will still consume some, but far less running a good euro oil its entire life and keep the oci to 5k miles. I don’t believe in long oci. Oil is cheap

? For the OP: Where does the oil go from those 750 mile drains? That oil from a new engine has to be almost ā€œnewā€ itself. I hope it gets drained carefully and in one of your other vehicles or maybe a friend, family or neighbors car.

Maybe ditch the first one with wear material in it, but the following dumps are good to go!

Goes to the recycler, then picked up from waste oil company, back to refinery, cleaned, turned into fuel oil for ships, asphalt, etc. I know bc I used to pick up waste oil.

thats bcs. most people dont even know about them.most people searching for KV to check how thick or thin an oil is. amsoil and redline is for more "educated " oil consumers .at least in Europe where there are many oil companies at better price.

It was pretty easy to figure this was going to be a looooong thread after post #2 with the mere mention of XW-40 oils or Mobil 1 (aren't they all?).

@Bullwinkle007, why don't you just go M1 0W-40 for both and stock up from Walmart when it goes Rollback or XOM does rebates? Call it a day and direct your stressing about it to some other threads. Might I suggest wringing your hands with the filter C&Ps, or something more productive like what you're eating, or doing, latest oil change, working on or what coffee you're drinking. Feeling froggy? Dip your toes in an EV thread, or really go rogue and espouse the virtues of one side or the other of a "thick" or "thin" oil 😁. Happy BITOGing!

I just did my 6 month oil changes for all of my vehicles this morning. I started at first light, (6:30 AM). And was all done by 9:30. I went with 5W-40 Mobil 1 "European Formula" for my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I was using Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20.

I could notice the engine was much quieter... Especially when the oil temp was over 200F with the engine idling with the hood open. I think I'm going to stick with it. The Toyota got its usual dose of 0W-40 Mobil 1, and Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-40 for my truck.

From now on I'm going to go to once a year oil changes. I just don't put enough mileage on them to justify changing oil every 6 months. Not to mention it's half the work, along with half the cost.
