I haven't seen this anywhere by me except at Fred's. They have SL Sae 30wt for $1.54 a quart. Just wanted to compare prices before going and buying a dozen or so quarts for my 4.0L Wrangler. If it's not that great of a price then I'll pass.

That price is probably about as good as you'll find. Out of curiosity, why are you using a straight 30, instead of a 5w30 or 10w30? Straight 30 seems a little thick, but then again, you're in Florida, so it probably doesn't matter.

Right now I am using 10w-30. I also have 12 more quarts Hav 10w-30 and 6 5w-30. But for summer only applications I figured straight 30 would be great here in the sunshine state. If anything I could get to blending some 30 w/ 10w-30.

Why not spend an extra 2 or 3 bucks per oil change and buy what it's spec'd for? (5w-30? 10w30?)

If I had that attitude about everything I bought I'd probably be broke.

I don't see the point of stocking 30 w now to use next summer at what I guess to be the high for oil and gas prices this year. I don't expect them to retreat to pre Katrina prices.

I don't see Havo 30w as Havoline or Chevron finest so again
what's the point if you can get new sm at the same prices before you need to use 30w in summer.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't straight SAE weights usually non-detergent oils? I would not use a non-detergent oil in a motor vehicle. They're meant for small engines that only have 40 hours runtime a season.

No they have detergents and are made for motor vehicle use.

Jeep Creep,

Not sure if there are Harris Teeter grocery stores where you're at in FL, but they're closing out Havoline this month. They have SAE 30, 10W-40 and 10W-30 SynBlend for good prices. The dinos (30 wt and 10W40) are 1.14 each, with the Syn Blen at 1.44 a quart. Might be worth looking into if you have Harris Teeter stores where you live.

The only application for a non-detergent SAE 30 would be an air compressor, as far as I'm concerned. Small gas engines, such as those used cutting grass, etc. definitely need and specify an oil with additives such as SAE 30 HD, such as the Havoline SAE 30 being discussed.

No, most name-brand SAE 30 & SAE 40 oils have detergents. A good way to check is to look at the API spec. on the bottle. Any straight-weight oil of (at least) API SH or better will have an ample supply of detergents. The Havoline SAE 30 that the original poster asked about, has detergents, and is a very high quality oil. In fact, it's almost impossible to find in these parts from early Spring to late Fall, due to all the people who use it in lawn care equipment.

Every non-detergent oil that I've ever seen is either labeled as "non-detergent" or "Suitable for applications that specify an API SA oil only".
