Havoline Lifelong available at Walmart and Amazon

My cousin bought a bunch of Havoline Lifelong Full Synthetic from Amazon when it was on sale for $25 a box. He's going to give me enough to send in for a VOA. At the same time, I'll send in some Valvoline Maxlife Extended Protection High Mileage Full Synthetic, Quaker State High Mileage Full Synthetic, and maybe some Quaker State Ultimate Protection Full Synthetic. Each in 5w30.

A local distributor near me has 0w30 and 5w40 Havoline pro-ds euro. I saw the thread from earlier where you mentioned it. Roughly 160 for 6 gal pitpack… I am not sure if it’s good oil or not.

It’s going to be good oil. Chevron does a good job with their products. That price puts it in stout competition though from Mobil, Pennzoil, Valvoline & Castrol. Not the price savings you’d hope for with a box purchase. I think most would just opt for Mobil 1 ESP 0w-30 or maybe Pennzoil Euro L 5W-40 at that price point without needing to buy 6 gallons.

That said, I’d run the Havoline in my vehicles without a second thought if I had it in my stash.

Havoline Pro DS Full Synthetic, Pro DS Lifelong High Mileage Full Synthetic, and Pro DS Euro Full Synthetic are group 3+ oils and have excellent additives.

G3+ is equivalent to GTL. So yes, these are good oils.

“Good oil” was probably not the best choice words… should have said is this oil going to compete against what is more readily in the marketplace, like the examples you had given.

I had actually been eyeing this oil for a while (reason I called a distributor).

And the price is not bad. Roughly 6-7$ a qt..

Same. Had my eye on them as well. Was speaking from the typical member point of view.

I’ve used a lot of the Havoline Pro DS (and various lifelong iterations) over the years in several vehicles.

6 quarts for $28 is a good deal if you are a 5+ quart user. Otherwise you have to chase whichever brands 5qt jug is on sale and then inevitably pay full price for an additional single quart.

My latest oil change was like $39 (with tax) for The Pro DS and a Toyota filter (Walmart).

In most places you aren’t getting the oil for that price.

As far as quality - I gave up caring a long time ago. Crap engines are going to fail regardless of your choice of oil - good engines are going to run regardless of your choice of oil.

I doubt it’s any worse than the equivalent name brand.
If you paid $11 for a Toyota filter, you got scammed. They are like $4-5 at the dealer.

Send to Oil Analyzers, Polaris, or Wearcheck for best results. Anyone but Blackstone or Speediagnostix.

I called the distributor this morning to confirm pricing, and it turned out to be around $31 a gallon in the six-pack.

Boswell Oil Company is the distributor with a storefront to purchase it. I have one close to my house. Maybe I can commit to it for a few oil changes in both of my vehicles and send this off to get it analyzed🤷‍♂️

I think it's a long run for a short slide. Many cheaper options off the shelf at Walmart with same or better approvals.

If there were more interest in it, I’d probably geek out and do it for BITOG’s sake. That said, I was fairly set on transitioning to HPL for the longer interval capability - and honestly, to get my wife off the “why are you changing it at 70%” comment (around 5k on her hybrid). A solution that supports more distance between changes just makes more sense for us. 😁

I appreciate the thought. I just think the Havoline Euro is so inaccessible for 99.9% of people that even if the VOA and UOA were really good, it wouldn't be too helpful because it is so hard to get or even impossible for most.

HPL is king for long OCI I think! If I did long OCI, it would be a no-brainer. Check out @Hohn 's UOA with HPL PCMO 15W-40.

I agree, and yes, @Hohn has been super helpful from a knowledge perspective...

Right now, my dilemma is picking out the right viscosity. My ram uses 0w20, and my wife's car takes 5w30. Obviously, I can use 5w30 in both. BUTTTT her car is an avid diluter - in 500 miles, the dipstick read 1/2 way to near full now. In a 6qt sump, I feel that's pretty significant.
Next OCI, I am having it sent off for GC fuel test.

But would I be okay with HPL PCMO 5w40 in BOTH of my vehicles? That's nearly doubling the kv100 in my ram.

EDIT: I will add that the HO (High Output) version of my engine requires 0w40... And the only things different from the two engines are some forged internals, and fuel pumps... the two share the same turbos but simply run lower compression/higher boost.

You'd be more than ok. In Atlanta, I'd run the 15W-40 PCMO like @Hohn, in both. He's much farther north than you too.

Don't use Blackstone or Speediagnostix!
I use ALS (wix). You have to send them to the Cleveland location for the GC - Atlanta doesn't have GC capabilities for gas, only Diesel.

I was aware of BS, but why not Speed? He uses GC for fuel dilution.. I thought his tests were pretty good... Just pricy.

but why not Speed?
His lab has a ton of errors. We see it all the time. He sends stuff back for a "recheck" all the time.

There's a terrible error on oxidation in one of his videos on Amsoil Synthetic Blend with Bearded Ford Tech, leading him to incorrectly conclude that it has esters. When they send the used oil analysis, the oxidation drops significantly, and he explains it away as "mixing" with the 0.5-1 quart of oil left over in the engine. Yeah right. His lab just goofed the oxidation on the first sample.

I do not trust his lab's findings at all. He doesn't even have his own lab. He has you send it to another lab which has no reputation around here. He just interprets it for you and doubles the cost.

Polaris, Wearcheck, Oil Analyzers are the best. I think Cat ok too. i'm not as familiar with ALS. Do they check oxidation? I think the chief usage of a used oil analysis is oxidation and TBN. The wear metals are typically just noise I think unless you get something with triple digits. It's not very common.

My Accord specs 0w-20 and is loving the HPL 15w-40. Don’t be afraid of a bit higher KV100. Especially in any vehicle prone to or known for dilution.

If you like the Chevron products I wouldn’t be afraid to use the Delo 400 XSP in 15w-40. It has gasoline ratings up to SN Plus, so that means LSPI protection and timing chain testing. Indeed, I have a couple gallons in my stash waiting for their own time to shine.

Especially in Hotlanta, I’d be all over the gas-rated 15w-40 options out there if the gasoline ratings was fairly current— SN Plus, SP, etc.

EDIT TO ADD: The Delo 400 XSP in 15w-40 has 1100ppm phosporus (ZDDP) and HTHS of 4.1. The TBN is 10 and it sounds to me like a pretty solid 40 grade option that just happens to carry many diesel certs.

Chevron has a contract with ALS & Polaris for their LubeWatch (used oil analysis) program. I'd venture a guess they're a solid outfit, they just mostly cater to industrial & large commercial operations.
