It's Friday and I have a free lunch!
I came into the office to catch up on work I couldn't do being locked out of my computer the last couple of days and the receptionist asked me if I knew anything about cars...
I explained that my dad was a mechanic for 50 years and I know a thing or two. She proceeded to tell me her car's check engine light was on and that it just didn't seem to have a lot of power getting on the highway.
I asked her if it would be OK to scan the vehicle using the scanner I keep in the car. She said ok. I pulled the codes and it was storing P0171 - System too lean.
I had a look around for vacuum leaks and found the airbox tubing going to the engine had a crack in it just below the one of the ridges. Sure enough I poked my finger in here to open it up and the engine started stumbling.
I looked up the part number on Rock Auto and sent her off to the local GM dealership to get a replacement and we fixed it in the parking lot in 10 minutes.
Needless to say she is happy and felt the need to buy me lunch in a few hours... It's a great friday and I look like a bit of a hero having saved her a diagnoses fee and mechanics time to replace the part.
GM Part #94537633 in case someone has a Chevrolet Sonic with the same problem. Rock Auto also carries the part for about $70 CDN (-35% or so for USD)
It must be a common problem because even Amazon carries it up here... Also because they put a lot of stress on the tubing the way it's angled from the air box to the throttle body it looks like.
