BUSH: HOLDING THREE JOBS 'UNIQUELY AMERICAN'
Tues Feb 8 2005 9:27:01 ET

Last Friday when promoting social security reform with 'regular' citizens in Omaha, Nebraska, President Bush walked into an awkward unscripted moment in which he stated that carrying three jobs at a time is 'uniquely American.'

While talking with audience participants, the president met Mary Mornin, a woman in her late fifties who told the president she was a divorced mother of three, including a 'mentally challenged' son.

The President comforted Mornin on the security of social security stating that 'the promises made will be kept by the government.'

But without prompting Mornin began to elaborate on her life circumstances.

Begin transcript:

MS. MORNIN: That's good, because I work three jobs and I feel like I contribute.

THE PRESIDENT: You work three jobs?

MS. MORNIN: Three jobs, yes.

THE PRESIDENT: Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that. (Applause.) Get any sleep? (Laughter.)

The hardest working people in the world!

He (Mr. President) and his buddies were rich before they got to Washington, along with all of the others representing our government. Democrats and Republicans.

Yes, I guess he would think it's fantastic that she's working a lot so that he and his buddies can be rich.

more words of wisdom from an all knowing and caring individual from across our northern border. God, they know so much more than the voting citizens in America. Maybe we can equally "critique" your last PM who's family members seems to have benefitted from SH. I like our Canadian friends and fellow BITOG members but I have a rule that I don't comment on their politics and don't expect them to comment on our's. it seems to work better that way. Otherwise it can get messy

Sorry Whimsey. I was just commenting on what I perceived to be an insensitive remark. He made a joke about someone who is likely not working 3 jobs because she loves them, while he has more money than she could ever dream of. I believe he should have thanked her instead of laughing at her misfortune.
Of course, maybe she just loves working. In that case: my foot is in my mouth.

In the future, I'll stay out of threads containing the words Bush, Republican, or Democrat.

Hey now don't Bush Bash. It's not an awkward unscripted moment but rather, a Bush'ism.

"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."

Theodore Roosevelt in an editorial in the Kansas City Star

FWIW, discussing politics on this board is frowned upon, regardless of which side of the border you live on. This is also an open forum, allowing everyone to post equally, regardless of which country's borders they live within.

I also held three jobs from 2/04 until 9/04. One was full time, while the other two were part time at one day per week for each. I was at work about an average of 73 hours per week. After all of this, I still managed to have 2-3 days off per week.

It's sad and becoming uniquely American that people actually think, for example, that the US President should be ashamed of his wealth, that he owes some of our money to this woman, and that it's a failure of "the system" because she works three jobs.

We know nothing of this woman. Why is she divorced? Why doesn't she have a better paying job? Does she like having three jobs?

Seems to me there is a lot of assuming here, so let me assume something: Most of the crap that went down in this woman's life was a direct result of her personal choices, her karma, her God. Our president does not need to be Clinton about it and "feel her pain"............seems no one balked at that phony BS.

Way to go Pablo, I'm drawing two monthly retirement checks from two different places and in a few months I will start drawing Social Security. Does that count the same as three jobs?

Many people our age were indeed fortunate to be able to work for good companies with benefits. Today, with the "Service" economy it's harder. We have had many plant closings here, but the unemployment figures look good, because people went from making industrial machinery to making hamburgers or moved.

I too hope to have a retirement from one company, 401K from another, and my IRA. If social security is there then...........
