Have manufacturers been lying for planned obsolescence?

I was told by a Honda Master Tech, years ago, that Hondas don't care what oil brand, type, or viscosity is used (within reason), as long as the oil is clean. They recommended changing every 3-4k miles. Is that for real or just a cash grab? IDK.

If you have a car that runs reliably, don't waste money buying a new one. In PA, we have 6% sales tax. So you buy a $45,000 car and get $10,000 on a trade-in, you will pay the tax on $35,000 or $2100. That tax gets you nothing. But put it into replacement parts on your existing car, you can probably extend its life by at least several years if not more. It is all about the money.

Unfortunately there is nothing new here. There is a design life / MTBF in every product made. Its in the design spec handed to engineering in development. Rapid developments in CAM/CAD modelling and other stuff has made it easier / faster to make things more cheaply that will last "just long enough". In the old days you had to build in more safety factor.

If you make the product cheaper then you make more profit. So you keep "value engineering" until you get to the point where it fails just beyond its design life - in order to save money.

Is this planned obsolescence? Technically it is not, but it has the same affect.
