2024 Tundra engine OCI plan

He is very vocal about his recommendation for 5000 mile/6 month changes. A common theme among the examples of oil-related failures he cites that I've noticed are people getting dealer bulk 0W-20. I think he makes that recommendation for the lowest common denominator -- the people who vaguely remember they need to get their oil changed and do it once a year at a Jiffy Lube when they have an open bay special. He also makes one recommendation for everyone, whether you short trip, have all highway miles, port injection, direct injection, etc. I think if you're running the oils people here run, you're probably ok for a little more. I personally still do 5000 mile OCIs but will go over the 6 month timeframe. I don't drive 10,000 miles a year.

He makes some interesting comments about AMSOIL towards the end, around 32:25. He is not a fan. In a recent video, he talks about using their gear oil instead of the straight 75 unicorn tears Toyota transfer case fluid. Maybe things got better for him with his interactions with AMSOIL. He buys it in 55 gallon drums now.
The oil journey for a technician is an interesting one. Factory training hardly touches on oil. You’re forced to trust the OEM recommendations. Then in the field you’re inside hundreds of engines per year and you can predict what the insides and pistons are going to look like. Then one day your jaw drops on a 300k mile engine that looks new inside and realize not all oils are the same. For me that was Mobil 1 Tri Syn. He probably had a similar experience with Amsoil in normally a problem engine or transfer case that changed his beliefs.

He’s still all in on Toyota OEM everything except their gear oils. He uses TGMO in his shop and on his personal vehicles. I just noticed he had a 5 gallon bucket of AMSOIL SG when he fixed his transfer case leak recently.

Some never learn….guess he’s half way there. You’d think with all the Toyota stuck ring problems he’d think outside the box. I guess at least he’s recommending the reduced oci with TGMO.

Thanks I didn’t know that!

What Glenda wrote is so true

Plus some of his stuff I find……interesting about filters and in particular plastic v. metal covers

Amsoil driveline fluids are respected by the best blenders and race teams. SG is no joke.

When they finally resolve problem (first main bearing issues happened in LS600 in 2018) they will recall all engines. Some people will get short block, some will get long block.
There are rumors they are developing new V8 twin turbo. Wondering if they will replace this abomination with it.
My Son's girlfriend has an $80,000 Sequoia. The only reason that haven't recalled it for the motor-is because it is a Hybrid-Toyota states if the motor grenades it has a secondary power source-the battery to be able to limp to the side of the rode.

I mean really-an $80,000.00 ride.

That is Toyota. Unless safety issue, they ain’t recalling anything.

I would not like changing oil chemistry back and forth every 5k. I know all oils are suppose to be compatible but its hard to say if the additive packs are going to be at odds with each other. I would find out what they are using and use that at 5k oci.s until you can make the change permanent.

I think its good idea to expose whichever deposits are in the engine, newer as tohugh it might be, to differnet type of detergents.

Are you aware of specific problems with using TGMO at TCCN recommended intervals (6mo/5k)?

The thing I found most interesting about that video was the claims some of these 3rd party oil manufacturers make with their oils. 10k miles, 20k miles, etc. TCCN seemed to make the point that even if you use one of those oils and run it the 10k-20k interval and then you end up with "stuck rings" those oil manufacturers aren't going to be there to cover the costs of your rebuild.

I’m sure his 5k TGMO oci is sound. I’ve personally had stuck rings with 5k oci’s on major name brand oils and believe simply shortening oci doesn’t cure piston deposits.

But have you had stuck rings with 6mo/5k OCI on TGMO specifically?

I have not. Have seen not so stellar results here over the years so I never felt the need to use it.

It is a bit rich coming from him, accusing someone of pushy marketing.
1. He does not know anything about oils. That is more than obvious.
2. AMSOIL has a bunch of hungry mouths to feed. Of course, they are trying to sell their product.
3. However, he has hungry mouths to feed, too. Hence, his videos with bombastic titles, holding his head etc. Someone might say pushy, fear-based marketing to get clicks on YouTube.
