Hatchback with Decent Performance

I measured. My bike will probably fit.
I think I would want some cover or shield to protect the back of the front seats, though.

I once owned a 2013 GTI. I'd fold the rear seats down, pop the front wheel off and put the bike in the back. The pedal left an indentation mark despite weighing about 20 pounds and sliding the bike in & out wasn't ideal.

Also had a trailer hitch and a slide in bike carrier that held 1 bike. I would use Gear Ties to secure the bike. A Gear Tie from the front wheel to the down tube prevented the wheel from flopping around. My concern with bikes on a rear carrier is they sorta block the taillights.

If you're scraping driveways and driving rough roads, sounds like you need an SUV and not a car...

To whit...

SUV:
Worse handling
Slower
Worse efficiency
No more easy/harder to work on, dunno why you'd opine that?
Higher roll-over risk
Easier to get under is easier to work on.

Everything else, maybe in 2004, but not so much in 2024.

Hell yes it is:
Audi

rs7 hatchback from www.edmunds.com
The 2024 Audi RS 7 is a midsize high-performance sedan with a hatchback-style trunk. It's powered by a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 (621 horsepower, 627 lb-ft)
While it's not a hatch in the traditional sense, I'd let it slide to consider it if it wasn't for the price. Personally I want the full Avant wagon, but I wouldn't kick this one out of bed.

I’ve had my Cannondale Synapse drop bar road bike in my GTI with the wheels on and the front passenger seat all the way forward. No damage and was easy peasy.

Personally I couldn’t think of a single thing I would want to drive less than some weak lifted hatch masquerading as a wannabe SUV.
I got to drive a newer Ford Edge recently. It drove nice, but its handling was just meh. I think it needs stiffer sway bars. My Grand Caravan with twice the mileage has better feel to it.

How do you refute the "everything else" argument? Every wagon/car that also has an SUV counterpart, out performs the SUV counterpart in those areas. One of the best examples because same platform, is the Stelvio vs Guilia. Super similar in every way but body.

I never understood the Edge ST. It really underperforms its rating. It needs the Explorer motor.

My in laws have the NA v6, very quiet. The little AWD graphic is kinda cool, I was pleased it didn’t torque steer, according to the display it was just seamlessly transferring power to the rear.

Most EV's are wagons, IMO. That's as low as I'm willing to go due to roads here, but if I COULD go with a car, I'd just buy a C8 and be done with it likely.

We've had a Ford Edge. Even bought the Sport with the larger 3.7. It was the most interesting version of the Edge at the time, but it's no hot hatch. Beyond that we had serious reliability issues. I'd post the picture of it being loaded up by Carvana, but apparently IMGBB is down right now.

IMGBB is back up, here it is!

What about a 2012-14 Jetta Sportwagen? 2.5L engine might need a vacuum pump delete but seems like they are very reliable by then. The Aisin 6spd doesn’t have much in the way of complaints. An aftermarket HU to get you CarPlay/Android Auto and back up camera. You’d be able to fit your bike in without issues and haul stuff around as needed.

My luck with Fords also isn’t great… parents had a Danger Ranger when I was born that was a “giant POS” according to my mom. They never considered another Ford vehicle, and I’m pretty sure if I bought one my grandfather would descend from heaven to ream my butt 🤣

I got stranded an hour away from home by an Exploder, with my ex girlfriend that I stayed friends with and her older sister, while trying to go to Warped Tour that puked all its transmission fluid out on the highway lol

I wouldn't buy another Ford. My wife expressed interest in the Mach-E which we planned to buy before the Edge problems, but neither one of us can seem to make peace with their products. She had a 90's Cougar V8 which was pretty solid, but we've had a Lincoln LS V8, a Jaguar S-Type V8 which was basically the same car, an F150, and the Edge. The LS was mechanically totaled for a rather mundane electronic part that no longer existed. After the Edge brake problems we decided to move on. I had the F150 at the time and it had been flawless aside some quickly resolved recalls, but the bad taste persisted from the other vehicles.

The Mach E's are pretty terrible. They still haven't figured out EV.

I wouldn't be putting a bike in something and carving up the interior.

Get the car you like and put a hitch and bike rack on it.
That is a concern. With my 99 Saab 9-3 hatch, I'm fine (with the rear seat down).
