Thanks for all the suggestions. Today, because it was "handy", I tried the vegetable oil (see video above). Poured about a table spoon into my hands, rubbed it all over both hands, followed that with ordinary liquid hand soap.
It worked great.
I was working on my car all day today, must have washed my hands about 4 times, use the vegetable oil each time.
I don't think my problem is a moisturizer problem, or drying out the skin problem. I can get solvents on my skin, even the back of my hand, my right hand, and it can handle it. It's just the mechanics hand cleaner (orange or gojo or the white stuff) that I can't use any more. I can spray brake cleaner on my hands to clean them up and they don't mind.
