You nailed it. This is why hardwood in the kitchen isn't a good idea. Eventually it'll get ruined due to water spills. Like having hardwood in the bathroom. But whoever does a flip doesn't really care what happens in 5-10 years.

Recently discovered Aunt had done this, except with those cheap, PB "wood" floors
Sure enough her new dishwasher installation guy didn't seal the connection securely, it leaked, and really buckled the floor. Even after this fiasco, she wanted it replaced with the same!
I told her that floor doesn't belong in a kitchen. Period.
Next time I showed up I found tile....smart choice.
