I think im going to use PP 5-30 in my Toyota 4Runner towing my camper for the next few months this summer (I usually use Shell Synthetic) and I was wondering how long I should run the PP under hard towing? ........ I am going to have it sent in for a test after a good use but I was wondering how long to let it go under hard use?

By the way I run the shell between 5 and 6K under easy use.

Do yourself and your truck a favor and run Rotella-T Synthetic 5W40. Do your normal oil change interval and do not worry about the towing! Send it in and smile! If you want a 30Wt. consider M1 10W30HM. If you want a great deal but want low wear numbers consider Valvoline Lremium SAE30 SM. If you run PP make sure you keep track of consumption but as far as wear numbers and OCI I would imagine anything thing 6 months of less reguardless of the miles should be just fine! PP consistently turns in good wear metal numbers it is the consumption, tbn drop, and low flash point that get me all worked up. I have a bunch of it myself but I got it for $2.50 a quart so at that price it is rreally hard to beat as long as I do not go through twice as much once I start useing it!LOL

I also agree with JB, run a HDEO 5W40 Synthetic (Rotella T, Delo, Delvac) for the best HTHS and least amount of wear all the time, but especially during towing.

PP is a great motor oil and if you want to stay with it, run the 10W40 or the 5W40 Euro spec (if you can find it), or at least the 10W30 for better shear stability.

I am a big PP fan and still use it in one vehicle that just loves 5W20 oils (Expedition), but have moved to Rotella T Synthetic (RTS) 5W40 for the other 2 as they both are known to benefit greatly by moving to a 30 or 40 weight oil.

Do you have any oil consumption with the Shell synthetic 5W-30? If not, use the PP 5W-30 without any concern with your 5K-6K intervals towing your camper.

is there any reason not to upgrade to a 5w-40... say Rotella T, which is prices pretty nice?

No Johnny I don't have any oil consumption at all and this is sort of why I was wondering why I should switch to a 40 weight oil?

Only if you are using lots of oil or have large ring clearances, IMHO.

Just so people know I too have a lot of PP thanks to BOGO at AAP. I think it does a more then a decent job of protecting from wear and keeping the engine clean! I just think it is way over hyped for it's obvious short comeing wich everyone constantly ignores. It definately isnot as good as M1 becuase it does fall flat on it's face in a nember of key area's. TBN retension, flash point and consumption are all important factors when looking at an oil. So just to be clear so no one thinks I am a PP hater. If I hated it so much I wouldnot 8 or so OCI of it sitting in my pole barn!

Where are you getting this from??

NOT from my UOA's...that's for certain. I've been very impressed with Flash point, viscosity, and lack of consumption. I don't check TBN, because I only run it less than 15,000 miles.

The reason to use a 40Wt. is because it is a better oil then what you have in mind. If RTS made a 5W30 I might recomend it but seeing how they only make it in 5W40 that is kind of a factor. The 40Wt. is going to have better HTHS, less shearing better tbn retension and far better flash point retension then anything that PP makes that you can find on a retail shelp. Most of the people that have had consumption with 5W30 PP have never had consumption before so go figure! It is not a 5W30 thing it is a non-G-IV or G-V synthetic 5W30 thing!Another gentleman with a Toyota Sienna has seen some comsumption in his van useing Valvoline Synpower 5W30. His van has never consumed any oil between oil chagnes with M1 5W30. So this is not just a PP thing.

RTS has proven performance that greatly out weights it's bargin price of $16 a gallon! You would have to spend 2X-3X as much to find a 5W30 synthetic that can resist shearing, hold it tbn, and maintain a consistently high flash point while holding wear metals to a low low number. The only down side and in my mind it is not much of a down side is that it only comes in a 5W40. Seeing how it is still a 5W and works just fine in a Michigan winter or a Texas summer I really can not see it as much of a negative. It is not like it is a SAE60 or something!!! If someone had a really small engine like smaller then 1.8 liters or it was an old tired low power I4 I could see the aditional drag of the 40Wt. maybe being an issue but not in anything that is remotely modern of makes 105HP or more. Oh and let's not forget this stuff will work in turbo charged applications no problem and can handle all the valve train pressure any gasoline engine can toss at it since it is designed to protect commercial diesels! A commercial diesel has vale train loads that are out of sight compared to gasoline engines!SO if you have a radical cam in a small block or big block piece of Detroit iron guess what RTS5W40 can handle it no problem!

So this my friends and peer's is why I think this is the most under rated oil on this forum and the most under used when you look at cost/performance ratio!!! It is the best all around comprimise for Most applications in the United States and can easily be run year round by most of us if not all of us in the lower 48 states!

Find me an oil with UOA on this site that cost $4 a quart of less and retains it's flash point,Viscosity and tbn better then RTS 5W40. I can already tell you that you will find it.

John, I don't think it's just a PP thing, but maybe a combination of what engine it is, what shape the engine is in, and maybe the oil. Here is a UOA on Mobil 1 0W-30 for a little over 6K. The oil change just before it was on PP 5W-30 with 1K more miles on it. No make-up was added and the PP (ever so slightly) has a better vis and TBN.

True I even said it is not just a PP thing I cited how a guy recently had consumption issues in his Toyota Sienna with Valvoline SYnpower 5W30 when he has never had any issue with consumption before when useing M1 5W30. I know that I have had issue with PP in my Lawn and Garden Tractor. It only consumes oil with PP I can use M1 0W40,5W30,RTS 5W40 etc.... no oil consumption but PP 5W30 it goes through. As soon as I drained out the PP and put some M1 5W30 back in it stoped. I like to run M1 0W40 becuase it works better then anything else I have tried for winter cold starting but I did not have any on hand at the time.

PP is just not an oil that is very stable it is volitile and seems to cause consuption in things that have never had consumption issues before and consumption increases in anything that already has some issues! It is not like I need to make this up it is geting mentioned by people all the time.

I have an entire fleet of vechiles that have been run primarily on M1 with a few other things being tried from time to time. None of them domestic or import consume any noticable oil on the dip stick normal between oil changes. My Camry will consume 1/4 per 3000 miles when ever I put an all ester oil in the first time after several runs of non ester based oils and that is it so I have 4 Toyota's and 1 Buick that I can use as a test bed for PP's consumption propensity.Lucky for us all it does not take a rocket scientist to notice if their car is suddenly burning oil or more oil then normal.

Personely any oil that has consumption issues really shouldnot be considered a premium product!

Then we will have to agree to disagree on this one as I think it is a premium product, and for every car you tell me has consumption problems with it, I will tell you about cars that don't, including 14 cars in my family and extended family. Everything from Ford's to Volvo's.
