Hard times

In the last year I have been laid off twice, now at my current job they cut everyone that is not FT down to 20 hours a week, while bringing in more new hires. My accident that happened 2 years ago this June is still not settled. I still have YET to get the shoulder surgery that I need due to the accident. I am contemplating seeing about a job at the college I attend or just saying scew it and go on disability. I have right side paralysis and have since birth. I could get on disability and be done with the job drama until I'm done with school.
It is VERY hard to find an employer that cares about the employees...

Right now most employers are worried about getting the most work out of each employee for the cheapest way possible thanks to what big brother is doing to them.

Maybe get on disability and go to school full-time ?

What are you currently doing for work ?
Retail ?

The more they "squeeze" each emplyee the less productive the emplyee has the desire to be.
I wonder if school student work would be different or should I just jump on disability?

I work for a rental agency.
By textbook definition I'm labeled as "disabled". But have been working since I was about 12 years old. This town, these people have just taken the stubornness and fight right out of me.

Stay in school...get some computer science related education and go for a web based career. Many disabled people do very well in virtual web based careers. Even if you have to go on disability to get the education...it is a way to self reliance for you.

Unfortunately, lots of companies are cutting back on hours and hiring more employees to fill the gaps - usually to keep as many employees as possible as 'part timers' to avoid having to provide health insurance coverage under Obamacare. So the net effect is that people who didn't have health insurance before still don't have health insurance, but now they work fewer hours so they take home less pay. Universal health care is a good idea in theory and you are a perfect example of why it is needed - but in practice it is too expensive under our current system because health care costs are just too high thanks to $300 bandaids, medical school tuition, and malpractice insurance.

Ok, sorry for the rant. Honestly I totally appreciate your attitue of working for what you have and truly earning it, but honestly you should probably get onto disability and focus on school. Once you graduate and get a f/t job, you can re-evaluate your situation.

Doog, I WILL stay in school. It is not an option for me to drop out. I am going to school for Physical Therapy. I've just 14 hours left and I should be done within a year going to school 3/4 time and working.
Getting on disability would be tough with my work history and pride takes a MAJOR hit. I have just created an online account for the college job search and will upload my Resume' later tonight. I'm doing my best to stay positive.
I feel that my best chance at employment is with the school, I feel like they are more likely look over the said disability, scars, limp..etc, whereas I'm seen as a general liability in the work force.

I am pretty sure the basis for your rant has always been there and the latest reason people can label is Obamacare. Many corporations have tried to keep as many as possible on part time to avoid any type of benefits(all kinds, not just health) for as long as I can remember. This is most common in the service/retail industries. The healthcare system has been broken for decades, just as has the tax system.

Excellent idea. Technology-related or science-related field such as chemistry or biology. And if you have the aptitude, learn a second language (if you don't already). Bilingual scientists are in high demand.

What does anyone expect in a wal-mart type retail wage slave world where everyone is replaceable? Sorry to hear of your woes, keep your head up and get through school intoa hard field that others cant pass through, so there is more opportuinity. That means math and science...

Someone, roughly 150 years ago, warned of the disappearance of "work" in place of the ubiquity of "labour". Work has value and provides fulfillment and a place for one in society; labour is a commodity performed by replaceable automatons who must sell their labour due to their having no capital. But it's true, without an education it is very difficult to get ahead in life.

After your begin your career you will be proud of your hard work and sacrifices. The finish line is at the bottom of the hill you are struggling to climb, don't give up now.

What does your wife say about your hours being cut ?

Sorry to hear about your hardship DrDusty. At least it sounds like you are trying to not go into debt while going to school. That's smart.

Retail is getting quite bad...eve though my company is healthy, the cutting has already started.


I'm looking too....try to stay positive, and do whatever it takes to finish school...

I don't understand how we allowed things to get so out of hand: Look at this chart of labor productivity growth compared to family income--Its been almost disconnected since 1975 and seems to be getting worse.

So much useful work in infrastructure from water and sewer systems to air transit is left undone, and yet there are roughly 15 million unemployed (based on labor force participation rates).

Now our supposedly left-leaning president wants to cut Social Security.....go figure.

Pop, I'm not wanting to have an employer take care of me. I just want to be around decent people and work like everybody else. People see the disability and suddenly I'm a liability to a company. I was actually told that I could not be fired,short of stealing from my current job because if a lawyer got involved the company would take a hit. I don't want that "special" treatment, just give the the hours like everyone else.
