I just bought a set of (4) Conti Extreme Contact DWS as supposedly winter capable all-season with decent life for our Subaru with 215/45/17's. I paid $538 installed and got a free TomTom GPS which is great.

They are quiet and handle pretty well for Subaru Legacy GT wagon. Excellent wet traction.

Well 2k miles latter

I see my 2.5 year old daughter pulling on the tire:

My wife mentions hitting a raised pothole.....

Great $138 for a new tire. I call dealer and states a free 2/32" road hazard on our particular model Conti tires :) So for $20 balance fees getting a new one.

I saw the price on those at TireRack to be pretty good, but I was concerned about the stigma of Conntinental -- loud tires with harsh/stiff sidewalls. What size are you running, and what model Subaru?

Wow,THAT took off some aluminum. In my area those island parking lot dividers take out more tires and wheels around here, its like the tire companies sponsored the installation of these or something. One usually has to duck and weave like its a mutated drivers ed course just to get to the store.

This has never been my experience with Conti. The CSC2 I had was very quiet and comfy, despite being a sport tire.

Our C300 came with ContiProContact tires. They aren't very sporty, but again, I find them quiet and comfy, despite them being low profile (225/45/17 front, 245/40/17 rear).

2005 Subaru Legacy GT wagon with the rarer 5mt. The grown up WRX.

This new set was to replace a previous set she hit a pothole doing 80mph and caused a sidewall split/1"+ bubble on our well worn(45k) Nokian WR G2's.

My major reason for Conti's price and they actually worked in winter conditions for a tirerack.com test.

I have a set of the DW tires (not snow) on the BMW. Not the sportiest things, they have soft sidewalls, but they're great for commuting to work and they're quiet. Besides, I have track tires for the fun stuff so I went with a quiet commuter tire for the street.

From what I've heard they are quite decent in the snow/ice (especially on a vehicle like yours, I could never use them in those conditions on mine), and it's hard to beat their price.
But, I would NOT expect the same winter performance out of them as your old WRs, despite Nokian labelling them as an 'all season'. (How many "all seasons" carry the snowflake on the mountain designation??)

I seem to sense a pattern developing...

I recently bought the DWS this winter for the NJ weather. I thought they were a nice upgrade over my Bridgestone Potenzas G009. Tire size 205/50/16, was the best tire for money I could find and did not bother going through TireRack this time around.

The only thing that concerns mean which I'm sure a lot will agree with is there wear indicators on their tires. These tires might seem pretty useless. after 15,000 miles that I would not be able to take it through the snow/slush/ice. I might have to take the plunge and actually buy some performance winter tires.
