I guess about a month a go I changed the oil in my Tacoma and tried Mobil 1 0w30 AFE. Immediately after starting it up I noticed how much louder the engine was (ticking) and it sounded completely different than my wife's 4-Runner (same engine). Her's had PP 5w30 in it and so did mine prior to the change. I can't remember where I read it, but someone commented on here that after the Mobil 1 AFE was in for a while it would quiet down. Well it didn't and I lived with until just now, changed it early @3900. I bought 6 oil change specials at AAP's last month, Syntec/K&N, it's already in the 4-Runner and there was no noticeable difference between it and the PP. As soon as I started the Tacoma up it quieted down and went back to the way it was and sounds identical to the 4-Runner again..

Strange!!!! I don't know why, but I'm glad it's gone!!!!

Strange, I believe the Syntec is thinner at running temp. I could see this at start-up in very cold temps, but wouldn't expect it to be noticable.

All oil is different. Mobil blends appear to be noisier than most IMO, but I had horrendous noise with Castrol Syntec too. And of coure PAO is a bad lubricant by itself - though a nice cold flow fluid. PYB is one of the quietest running oils in a non-taxed engine, IME. These high detergency oils can cause a lot of cleanup and may require multiple filter changes even during an OCI. Oddly, a dose of ZDDP in the M1 oils seems to calm then down.

What was your filter in each case? I've seen similar things happen when I use a FRAM. Getting rid of the FRAM solved the problem immediately.
