The official birthday of the US Air Force is 18 September 1947.

In 1947 President Truman signed the National Security Act which established a new defense organization, and along with it the creation of the US Air Force as an independent service, equal to the US Army and US Navy.

So, Happy Birthday to the United States Air Force and my brothers in blue.

You know, I had intended a simple shout out to the USAF.

I mean, as far as aerospace, everyone knows the Navy is first in space...

First American in Space: Alan Shephard, CDR USN
First American to orbit the Earth: John Glenn, MAJ, USMC (part of the USN)
First Man to walk on the Moon: Neil Armstrong, Naval Aviator, combat veteran in Korea.

But I love the USAF. Seriously.

The Thunderbirds inspired me to fly. My kid brother flew for the USAF. I served with the USAF at Al-Udeid. I've been through formal (RTU) USAF schools, twice, on the AOC. I've even got my distance learning completed at Air Command & Staff college.

So, let's just wish the guys in blue a Happy Birthday.

And while the celebration takes place, let's hope they can educate the "Public Affairs" folks that came up with this sign at Tyndall... I'm sure they intended to honor the United States Air Force... but...

Enjoyed my time as a Defender. Happy Birthday, Big Blue! Who still has their Airmen's Coin? A lot of coins have fallen into the crosswalk in San Antonio.

Thanks Astro. Much appreciated. Tyndall guys spending too much time on the golf course (that's a place of wide open space where you can strike a ball and then chase it. All Air Force base have them....)

Cheers.

I saw something extremely close to that in a recent firearms magazine and thought, 'I bet there's a graphic designer somewhere now looking for a new job'. lol

But wow, that's actually hanging up at Tyndall AFB somewhere? How have heads not rolled?

I've heard that the USAF builds those first, so that when they run out of construction money, and have to ask for more, the "ask" is for runways...

We call that "getting Congress pregnant". Works every time.

Didn't have much time to pay attention to the Riverwalk, too busy with the then GF.
Still have my coin, been out 16 years.
Air Power!

I had no idea the Air Force was formed then.

I assumed my grandfather was in it during world war 2 as a Captain/weatherman on a b-17.

U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) actually, the Air Corp preceded that...
