Im wondering how bad having an Engine Half a Quart to One Quart Overfull in Engine Oil will affect the Engine?

I also wonder if it will be less Negligible on an engine that holds 8 Quarts (like my Jaguar, or a Corvette) instead of 4-5 Quarts (as most do) ?

Im sure its fine.. I just wonder if that would actually HELP Oil getting up to the Upper Cylinders faster, regardless of Grade?

My Car Pressurizes fast, i wonder if these numbers are Good:

1) First turned on, Idle: 65Psi
2) Warmed up, Idle, 10 Minutes: Still 65-ish PSi
3) Hot, (20 minutes) at Stop light: 20-40 Psi
4) Hot, Driving down Road: 60-ish PSi

(Oil Pressure affecting Lube Speed of Upper Cylinders, my car pressurizes nice and quickly.)

Thoughts?

1/2 - 3/4 of quart overfull I think most will agree is harmless.

when you get to around a quart overfull, you get into dicey territory - some engines have the capacity to take it, others really don't.

Just keep the oil level as close to the 'full line as you can - a couple of millimeters over or undr is neither here nor there.

I have read over on the JagLovers forum that The XJ6 engine will consume oil if filled beyond the halfway point between add and full marks on the dipstick. Can't confirm that information is accurate but since the oil capacity is already 7-9 quarts why would you want to add more?

Yes, it is not as relevant for you, but why overfill a 8 quart sump?

There are a few other engines that will do this.
I had a '86 Iron Duke 4 cyl. that was like that.
It wanted to run at 1/2 qt low regardless.

Those look like good oil pressures, wish I had a gauge on my car.

It makes no difference to oil circulation, pressure, or burning if the oil is say 1/8-1/4 inch over full. The oil pan is just a reservoir where the oil pump pulls oil from. As long as the pickup tube is covered with oil at all times nothing changes to the circulation. Technically there wold be a slight pressure from the few inches of oil above the pickup, but that isn't an amount that could be seen on an oil guage. IMHO

I would think the real question would be whether overfilling it by x amount would bring the level up to making contact with the rotating crankshaft. If it does, especially for an extended period of time, the crank can whip the oil up into a frothy mix that doesn't lubricate as well as non-aerated oil. That is going to depend on the application. I don't think anybody can answer generally "is a quart too much a bad thing," but some can probably speak to specific applications.

I have heard that the XJ6 engine consumes oil even when it is not running.

Good god man!! Your a 1/2 to 1 Qt. overfilled? Obviously you care nothing about your fellow man. When that things blows, and it will, we are talking utter devastation, in an area the size of a city block.

That thing is a time bomb waiting to go off,

Actually, mine does not drink Any....

And im really questioning if i NEED to go 20W-50! I didnt SEE 20W-50 in my Wal-Mart, but i may give it a shot.. From Advance Auto :D

nucleardawg: To make you feel better, ill spill my oil in Louisnana Oceans and then drive back. It will give my Engine some goosd cleaning. Ill start with MMO and finish up with SeaFoam. great weather!!!

This is my understanding, too. It's logical from an engine designer's perspective. People can be expected to misjudge the amount when pouring in a partial quart, but not when it's a full bottle.

Only 20W50s I see in Walmart now are GTX and Supertech. You can always get an HDEO 15W40. Looks like if you want a specialty oil/race oil/hot rod oil anymore, they can only be found at auto parts stores. Wal Mart seems to only be carrying mainstream oils now.
