Can anyone explain the magic that happens when you cross some arbitrary line into the Dominican Republic??? Does Haiti just happen to be some waste vent for the Bermuda Triangle that dissects the island?

I am not worried about the then what. If we always worried about that and what might be in it for us we would never do anything. We should help because we can and should.
The vast majority of those people are innocent victims of a disaster. What there government was or wasn't doesn't change the fact that they are suffering and need help and we are able with our vast wealth to help them.
We are not helping government but people.

It is not the role of this once great Republic to be doing 80% of it is doing currently. But, it is time to help those in need - the whole world is helping. Help if you can, help if you're so inclined.

I think that is what the people are skeptical of. I would donate in a heartbeat if I knew every dollar would go to a person in need, but I don't think that is the case.

I was watching CNN and they showed a UN truck passing out energy biscuits. Well, the Haitians saw the pack date of 2008 on the wrapper and declared the food "no good". They started throwing the food on the ground. "It no good! No good!" The reporter clearly showed some of them the expiration date of 2010. They must not have been that hungry.
This is not meant to be a racist comment but the majority of these Haitians are savages, even before this catastrophe.

China held up the runway in Haiti couple days ago for hours due to a photo-op with their plane. Unbelievable.

I think the presidential palace is from the Papa Doc era. They were finally starting to become a normal functioning state after years of chaos now they have been set back. Each time I see footage from there I want to cry. I've been through a devastating earthquake and can understand them.
It's a very unpleasant situation. And ours was during winter so the dead bodies did not smell as quickly as in the tropics. It is very traumatic for the survivors.

Every person posting in this thread has already won the most important lottery, and that is to be born where, when and to whom you were born.
Chances are, that if you were to reapeat the process, you are 10-12 times more likely to end up somewhere nasty, impoverished, or oppressed.
Only fitting that we put our hands in pocket to help people in genuine hardship.

If they didn't have a single functioning fire department in the capitol city, they were FAR from becoming a normal functioning state.
