Had someone else change my oil today! ARG!!

I'm getting older and sometimes wonder what will happen to the universe when I can't at least change my own oil. Right now it's too terrible to contemplate even though I know that day will come.

My dad has had skin cancers removed for years(50+ years of working in the Fl and Ga sun year round).Don't sweat the oil change.Just take care of yourself.

I feel your pain buddy. Back in November of last year, I had some work done to my wife's car. I told the fellow, "while it's here, go ahead and change the oil and filter." He's a good person who did a great job, but I still obsessed about the oil change.

On the spot removal note, my Dad worked in the Florida sun all his life, he's had a bunch of spots removed over the years but is still ticking strong at 94. All the best on your recovery and may God bless you with many more oil changes to come

I'm also a fair skinned ginger here with an identical twin brother. In my line of work I'm either in the house working from my laptop or driving in the car...not out in the sun much but I've had some nasty burns when I was younger. My brother on the other hand has spent his work career outside with a LOT of sun exposure. He's had several basal cell cancers removed from his face (one was quite deep by his right eye a few years back...had to be done twice to get it all) but is OK with no additional "spots" for the last several years (he uses a potent sunscreen now). I've never had a skin cancer up to this point (but watch carefully due to the cumulative effects from my previous exposures and burns). I had a doctor recommend that I use a hydroxy acid cream 2-3 times a week which I've done for a few years...he thinks it may help prevent some of the cancers by "burning" them out before they start (not sure if it works but so far so good...plus it makes your skin look great...like that matters at 57). Melanoma is nothing to fool with but can be successfully treated if caught soon enough (sounds like they caught yours early). My newphew's wife has had multiple melanoma lesions removed from her back (probably due to heavy sun exposure and tanning she did when in her late teens and early 20's). Some of them were fairly deep...she's only 30 years old. If my nephew hadn't noticed them and insisted she have them checked out she'd have never known about them in time. It's been a couple of years since they were removed and she's had no additional problems (and is expecting their first baby any day now).

On the oil change front it's coincidental that I had the front brakes on the van done by a local shop yesterday. I had a new filter in the van for an oil change I was planning on doing Saturday. My mechanic saw the filter and "assumed" that I wanted the oil changed...which he did...with Valvoline 5W30 (I've been running Pennzoil Ultra in the van for the last 25,000 miles). He felt bad when I told him I didn't intend to get the oil changed but said it was fine and I was going to do it this weekend anyway. I KNOW that the Valvoline is fine oil and can switch back to the Ultra at the next change but it's taking everything I can muster to not drop that oil and refill it with the Ultra (going to leave the oil in for 3-4,000 miles). We're an odd bunch here...I'd have been less bothered if the dry cleaner had ruined my favorite suit.

I had the test done 4 weeks ago and they came back as Melanoma. The surgeon feels like he got them early, but will get the results back next week. The insission on my arm was 3.5in long by 2in wide and 2.5 in x 1.25in wide on my neck so I'm pretty sore right now, and have to be careful not to pull some stiches. I have done some small welding jobs this week including a alum head repair and other things but my wife has done the lifting for me.

Have a speedy recovery. It's nice to have a wife that can do the heavy lifting.

Your health is the most important thing to watch for, I hope everything will check out OK.

As far as watching the oil change guy like a hawk... yeah I've done that too along with checking oil level and leaks right in front of the oil change place. The looks I got were priceless though.

may a Speedy Recovery be in your future.
Dad just had a spot on his ear diagnosed yesterday. (not sure what exactly the diag. was, only that it is cancer.) they gave him a scrip for a tube of "chemo creme" ($440), that "should" take care of it, if not, they'll schedule surgery for august, and have to take a skin graft from the shoulder.
he still won't wear a hat out in the sun though..."it gets too hot with a hat on"

...interestingly enough, his twin brother has/had the same cancer, same place. they also both have the same blockage in the blood vessel leading into the heart...

I normally give people a hard time about not changing their own oil, but recovering from cancer surgery is an acceptable reason!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery and no recurrences!

Seriously though, next time have the guy pull a sample for a used oil analysis so maybe you can finally extend the OCIs past 10k.

TIG's recovery time isn't the big deal. Let's hope that they got all the melanoma and no more shows up. THAT is the big deal.

Melanoma kills. Basal cell cancer just eats your face.

Tell anyone close to you who is a sun bather or otherwise is out in the sun unprotected (surfer, carpenter, etc.) that they are nuts. Ask them to do some research on the death rates from melanoma, the disfigurement from the surgery if the person survives, and the ugly, leathery skin after years of sun exposure even on those who don't get skin cancer. I've had a couple of basal cells removed from my face and pre-cancers frozen from my scalp. Years ago sun lamps were used as a treatment for acne!

Someone trusted doing your oil change...meh. That's majoring in minors.

Best wishes for speedy recovery and about

On checking the oil you mentioned, I laughed, as that was the first thing I did. Second, checked the garaged floor for leaks. Just can't help myself.

I never change my oil and I always check the level and peek underneath before leaving the shop. Last couple of oil changes, I have ended up tightening the drain bolt few nights to stop the oil drip.

That would hurt very badly if you got the leak after shop changing the oil for you!

I've had three BC cut off (or lasered off), hope you have a speedy recovery.

As far as having other people change oil, my daughter-in-law took her Versa to a quick change place (Valvoline) and I noticed some oil was dripping on my driveway when she was over. Pulled it up on my ramps and sure enough the oil filter was loose and leaking! I ended up putting in 2 quarts of oil ! I don't like trusting other people, I always do my own oil and most of my kids!

I do appreciate all the positive comments, thanks a million. After OC leaks and stipped drain plud threads is just two reasons why I change my own.

Oh yea--? You'll be sorry at about the 500-600 K mile mark---yep, you'll be eating your words then
