Any issue changing to 5w30 in my Ford Raptor?

I have had my 2014 Ford Raptor with the Boss 6.2 since approx 68k miles. I ran Mobil 1 5w-20 when I first got it about 7 years ago but noticed I got considerably worse MPG as well as the engine idle wasn't as smooth so I swapped to Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 which I could find more easily in the area I lived in at the time. While running Pennzoil Platinum I got about the same MPG and idle was smoother. I moved a handful of years ago and took the plunge to Amsoil 5w-20. I ran the motorcraft oil filter until I swapped to Amsoil. Now I run their oil filter. Overall no complaints about the oil or filter. Did an UOA earlier this year and seemed to do well. Can share that here if that would be of any help. I have done some reading on here, some raptor forums, ford forums, etc. Even talked to a few of the shops like Foutz who were heavily involved with the gen 1 Raptor when it was being designed. Ford at some point changed the oil from 5w-20 to 5w-30 for SD F250's with the 6.2. The only differences between the Raptor 6.2 and SD 6.2 is the cams and tuning from my understanding. The Raptor has slightly more aggressive cams and tune. This is my daily driver / weekend warrior. Building on the truck since last year to take it to Baja with one of the groups that make multiple runs a year. I now have approx 150k miles and no signs of issues. I have been thinking about swapping to 5w-30 in the truck but was curious if changing with so many miles now would matter? I figure having same oil for both trucks in my fleet would help too. I run a 5k mile OCI on all my vehicles.

You never mentioned the milage, or maybe I’m just not seeing it. I only see that you got it at 68k miles.

But if your truck made it to I’m summing high miles with 5w20, why not just keep using it?

Sure you can try 5w30 but what are you trying to accomplish here? Did 5w20 cause more wear on the bearings overtime? I guarantee you it didn’t.

I would just use 5w20.

FWIW I use NAPA brand full synthetic 5W-30 in everything. You can catch it on sale or use their 20% coupon which is available just about every time I check out their site. IMO 5W-30 has a little more protection and margins for error in case you get fuel dilution or go a little too long on your oil change interval. When I had my 5.0 Mustang GT, I used the NAPA oil with Motorcraft filters.

I have a 2014 SD with the 6.2 and run 5w-30. Nothing has exploded yet. No mileage issue and runs just fine with it. Seems like the 30 weight oils are supposedly a good compromise for protection in a big V8 and good flow. Either way, the 6.2 is built pretty well and will run well into the 200-300k range with regular maintenance.

I have a ‘14 F150 FX4 with the same 6.2. Been running 5W-40 with zero issues. Currently has HPL HDMO CC in it. Previously had PCMO 5W-40. Another poster here runs Delo XSP 5W-40 with good results up in Canada (I have some on the shelf as well & might end up with a run or two of that as well).

You’ll be fine with 5W-30.

Also OP, since you already have a relationship with Amsoil, why don't you reach out to your dealer or better yet @Pablo and ask what they'd run. Given your climate, you could probably run 10W-30 easily or 5W-40 (sadly no 10W-40 SS available).

Made the swap to 5w30 during my last oil change. MPG is slightly worse but not enough to care. I expected a slight decrease. Thank you all for your input. Having both trucks on same oil will make things easier.

Small bump to this thread. With rising costs overall in this economy, motor oil shortages a very real thing, etc. I am thinking of swapping to Mobil 1 FS Euro 0w40 in the truck. Thoughts?

My truck usage has changed. It is now a weekend warrior / toy so its sits a lot more. I picked up a 2023 BMW 840i Gran Coupe as my new daily driver with possible return to office soon and gas prices.

Find a Euro 5w40 at walmart on the shelf and start doing them yourself. Your engine may or may not know the difference between the oils. I know you are not hugely concerned with mileage, but there may be a slight loss in mpg.
Other train of thought is you've made it this far, why change?
(5w30 will be fine btw)
