Guess what happen in my town today...

Yikes! I was wondering how the train stopped so fast, but you could see one rail bend up in front of the engine at the end... Must've partially derailed too.
 
Yes there are lights and a gate. The gate closed on top of the truck suggesting that the truck tried to cross and got stuck some time before, while the gate was open.

Aren't oversized trucks required to hire a flag car to go in front of them and make sure the route is OK for an oversized truck? Did that guy just do the Homer Simpson "nothing to see here" whistle and drive away?

I saw the news story on that. Four locomotives derailed and are on their sides.

How much does a 60' concrete beam weigh? Talk about pucker factor for the guys in the lead locomotive that saw it coming!

Usually when a traffic signal is that close to a railroad track, the railroad equipment sends a signal to the traffic signal equipment when a train is coming so it can change to green and clear the crossing, this is called pre-emption.

Was it installed?

Was it even working?
 
My kid is a train aficionado (and guitars, and airplanes, but I digress). I showed him the video, his jaw hit the ground when you could see the rail peeling away from the rail bed like a Twizzler. You’d think there would be some avenue for emergency services to relay the message from the semi to the rail line to try to prevent this.

I know it’s unlikely but I hope everyone especially on the train is OK.

All railroads in the USA have an emergency notification number, posted on a sign near the railroad crossing.

Since this involves Norfolk Southern, let me tell you about the time I came across a malfunctioning Norfolk Southern RR crossing at about 1am. Gates were down, lights were flashing. I called the number posted on the sign, intending to make Norfolk Southern aware of this situation.

It rang. And rang. And rang. I probably let it ring 30 times and nobody ever answered. I tried calling again and again nobody answered.

I have a very low opinion of Norfolk Southern, from that experience and others.
 
I think DOT requires trucking company to notify the cities / counties when it’s transporting oversized loads and get a permit so stuff like this doesn’t happen.

100% blame on the trucking company.

The permit here is issued by the California highway patrol and they tell you when you can drive and what rout you must take. They have goofed many times like sending a 16 ft tall load under a 14 ft bridge
