what do you mean by didnt keep your engine clean, did you get sludge?

I didn't get sludge (a low temp/high moisture phenomenon). I got varnish (high temp phenom.). My thread link above talks about it. Strong TBN really helps with cleanliness but a heavy dose of top notch dispersants and antioxidants are also needed. A good blend of basestocks (should have some Group 5) is also needed. I wouldn't trust a dino HDEO to keep my engine clean after seeing how easy it was to cause Delo 400 15w40 (CI-4+) to form varnish in one of my high temperature tests.

This is a very informative read on the subject:

One more thing BillionPa, I was using the old formulation 5W-40 Lubromoly, while you have the new version (according to your VOA). It's basically two different oils. The new may be much improved.

i am more interested in wear protection and friction reduction than varnish protection. varnish is no biggie to me, it wont damage the engine unless its acidic.

how old was your LM 5W40?

Varnish is definately to be avoided for many reasons. It's not a quick killer like sludge can be but it does shorten engine life. It is acidic. It can cause PCV system problems too through either "sticking" or even clogging. The link below gives good info on it.

I don't remember the date code on my Lubromoly but I got it at AdvanceAuto Parts (sp?) last winter, spring, and summer. All the bottles are gone so I can't look but none of them were older than 2005 production, IIRC. I'm not trying to scare you from Lubromoly 5W-40. Continue to see how it does for you.

The best medicine for sludge monsters is to change the oil often.... like 3K maximum with a name-brand dino.

3000-5000 OCI with valvoline ac until 100k then maxlife blend with 5000 oci. will do the trick. Plus change the pcv valve every 30-40k..works on mine fine.
