I am going to be doing a rad drain and refill on my Suburban in the next few days. Does anyone know where I can still get green coolant in Canada? It seems all the Prestone products are now "universal" type coolant.

Canadian Tire has AutoLab brand in green, but I don't know if it's any decent considering the quality of there other products.

Does Wal-Mart sell a SuperTech green coolant?

It's a '93, so no Dexcool. I have used nothing but green in all my vehicles over the years and have had no problems. I just wish it was easier to find.

Nothing wrong with traditional green -- I don't why they ever changed it to all the others -- must have been the environmentalists. They didn't improve a thing only made decisions harder.

Canadian Tire sells Nascar Advantage coolant. It's not green... it has some color-change technology, I think it starts pink and turns orange when it's due for a change. But if you read the label, it's otherwise a traditional formulation, not a Dexclone or all-makes/models variety.

I think London Drugs sells traditional green too, but not sure on the source or quality.

Canadian Tire now has it's "Certified" brand coolant, which is the old green stuff. I've used Certified brand stuff before, and it seems to be decent quality (for the money). My local CTC doesn't seem to carry the Auto Lab stuff anymore, even though they do carry the rest of it's product line.

I drained the rad today, flushed the front and rear heater core and refilled with the green coolant and dionized water. The heaters are much better now.

Changing coolant isn't a big deal for me, and it's pretty cheap to do. So I've never been interested in the long life stuff.

I mean, not to get picky, but the Honda Type II is (IMHO) much more of a blue than a green. Nissan is definitely green, but not the same green as old-style "Prestone green". And definitely not the same chemistry.

Then there's Toyota red. And Toyota pink.

Though PG based I do believe Sierra has traditional additive package. A drain, flush and fill with Sierra is an option. Unlike the old wives tales out there PG & EG are completely compatible the only thing that will change is the FreezePoint & BP slightly one way or the other. I have used it with good results and I don't worry about it when I do a drain and fill the next time.

If you can find a John Deere Dealership(not sure how plentiful they are in Canada) they sell a green antifreeze called Cool-Gard and also a newer formulation of it called Cool-Gard II. Its a heavy duty green antifreeze used in all John Deere machinery and will work well in your Suburban. I have it in my 2003 silverado and I love it. Although here in the midwest there is a JD dealership around every corner...

Traditional green North American coolant was developed primarily for engines with cast-iron blocks. It has a high pH (~ 10.5) that is not well-suited to aluminum, but it is a great match for older American vehicles.

OEM Japanese coolants that are green use a completely different additive chemistry (P-OAT) from traditional North American green coolant. They are not interchangeable.

I know that Peak still markets a traditional green coolant but I don't know who sells it.

Actually, I have seen more of the autoparts stores carrying traditional green coolant. Advance Auto advertised it recently their monthly circular. Not a recommendation for usage, just an fyi.

fwiw, I'd agree with the previous post regarding intended application of traditional green.
