After reading about the possiblity of cut thread junk on Purolator filters, I checked 8 or 9 on Saturday. I found what looks to be graphite on every filter thread. I check several mobil 1 filters and found the same graphite but not as much. Is the new? I guess its to make them screw on easier but I am sure some of it gets into the oil. I guess that is not a problem but I am surprised this has not been discussed before.
I wonder if this could be the thread filings others have reported on the Purolator filters?

I believe what you are seeing is machine oil left over from cutting the threads. I've found it on every filter I've ever checked. I always take a clean rag and remove it prior to installing the filter. Be careful, sometimes you'll run into metal slivers as well.
