I hope this isn't Clint's swan song. Excellent flick, IMHO. All of those young actors got some great exposure, I am sure well see them in the future, especially the girl and toad.

Huh? How did you manage to misinterpret what I posted as a mood issue? I just don't care to discuss movies that I've already discussed.

When you're entire post said and I quote "mori isn't in the mood now." When most people say that, it means they are not in a good mood. All I did is hoped it improved. I did not know you already discussed the movie!

My GF (blonde, blue eyed) asked me (Japanese-American) if I was offended by all the Asian slurs.

Heck no, I wasn't. It cracked me up to hear Eastwood's character use them improperly.

Good movie, BTW. I especially enjoyed seeing all that Asian soul food.

I'm kind of surprised no mention of this movie for the upcoming Academy Awards. My reasoning is that besides Eastwood, there are no other "stars" in the movie.

That was a great part of his character, he didn't even care to use slurs properly.

It was interesting that the movie included the Hmong culture. There are quite a few living in the US but most people have never heard of them. There is a very large Hmong population in Fresno and the surrounding communities.

We have a huge Hmong population in the Twin Cities also.

I'll ask some at work about it. Curious to what they think about the movie.

Im a Clint Eastwood fan and I thought it was one of his best. I am like some of the others above, it reminded me of my grandfather as well.

Finally rented this one. GREAT MOVIE. Even the oldest daughter appreciated Eastwood. He is a true classic. Decent acting from all the characters. The sister had the faked non-nervous (but really showed nervous) down pat.

My wife laughed like crazy at the slurs. Heck he didn't just center on Asians. Got us Italians too - but those people are more real (even though it's a movie!) - in the way they act than some of clownish ways the PC press (and it's elected leaders) tell us we should "feel" about racial stuff. Laugh, smile it off and right back at you. But that's not really what the movie was about, now is it?

I wanted that car like 2 minutes into it.

"ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while... that you shouldn't have f'ed with?........ That's me"

Just ONE of the great scenes in this great movie. Filmed in Detroit. See it on youtube.

I think the girl "Sue" is getting married to TPitcher.

I loved the scene(s) when he finally went into their house, and started eating....chow looked tasty!!

My wife is Japanese, and I watched it the first time without her. My friend and I both agreed that she shouldn't see it. Only because she likes to know everything about what was said, and I don't know what the background of all the racial slurs is.

Who cares? Either she's ethno-sensitive or she isn't. Is "Japanese" all that she is as a person? Does she have anything to be ethnically ashamed of ..and therefore sensitive to? I mean in that she "identifies" with it??

That just sounds odd. How can you decide for an adult what they see or not? Are you saying she would need translation so you decided it would be too tough?

Well, I don't think I'm gonna share some of my secret stash of video clips with my wife. So, I DO decide what I share with her ..but..

What's the Japanese angle here? Not that I took "East-Asian inventory" ..but I would have assumed that they were either Korean or Taiwanese ..or whatever (I did not care to scrutinize it).

I went with my Chinese g/f, well... on again/off again g/f. She wanted to see it and had free tickets.

She was not offended with any of the racial slurs and felt the movie portrayed the plight of some Asian immigrants fairly. Most of her Chinese, Taiwanese, and Singaporean friends have seen the movie and I cannot recall anyone stating they were offended.

This is an important movie for Asian immigrants as it brings Hollywood megastar power to some of their social issues and shines a light on them. My g/f really loved it that Eastwood was involved in a movie that dealt with issues many Asians can identify with.

I think that it also draws parallels that are often overlooked in more familiar ethnic surroundings. Just because you're of different ethnicity doesn't necessarily mean that you don't hold the same basic core values and aren't subjected to the same violations that others endure ...the corruptions too.
