Can't believe I didn't start using k&n a long time ago. Filter is not very accessible, and it's always too tight to unscrew by hand.

Do any of you use k&n just for the nut?

I use a K&N on my cycle due to the location and its hard to access issue. Works well for me.

I'll admit one of the features I like,is the 1-inch nut

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't!

K&N's got nuts, Pure Ones don't.

But Pure Ones have texture for easy hand tightening installation, and removal.

But as said above, an oil filter cap wrench works well for me if hot engine/filter expansion makes hand removal difficult.

* Just trying to keep it light here as this board is beginning to sometimes resemble the oil additives board.

Frams also have a texture to make them easier to take off and had it way before the PureOne.

I use a filter on one of my vehicles which if needed I can use a 3/8 extension to take off.

I used to get the pure ones just because of the grip feature. Then I found out that just using a blue scott towel on a regular filter works as good or better.

The 17mm nut saves some fairing removal.

Are you seriously comparing a Fram to a Pure One? Yes the Frams had the grip first, they also were and still are referred to as the Orange Can of Doom, the Pure One has no such distinction. I view the texture on the P1 as an improvement on an already quality product with top efficiency. The grip on the Fram is like putting lipstick on a Pig.

fwiw, the Puro made Advance Total Grip, which I also use, also had the texture before they added it to the P1.

Once again, quoting/highlighting my post to what point? Congrats using a filter you can use "a 3/8 extention to take off". I'm happy for you.

He's talking about Fram in general. The grip texture is not just on the orange can. I have the grip texture on my Fram Xtended Guard. I'll compare that filter to the Pure One any day since i use both the Xtended Guard and the Pure One filters. Just because it's a Fram, don't assume it's the orange can.

Back to the original topic, i use the plyers style wrench to take off my filter. It works great on just about any filter.

I didn't know he had a spokesperson on this board, and who cares if Fram had it first? Not me. What's the point?

Is it important and pertinent to the discussion of getting the filter off? No.

And the only Fram that you can even come close to comparing to a Pure One is the Extended Guard, and it hasn't been around near as long as the Pure One. It efficiency doesn't match Pure One and it's more expensive than Pure One at ~$8 bucks at Wally. At least it's clear what your real issue is with my post that wasn't responding to you.

Back to the original topic, if you like the nut that's cool, I'm just not willing to pay more for it when a cap wrench works fine for me.

The TRD PTR43-00080 I just got look like a black K&N clone and have the nut.
(But these have full synthetic media like an RP, and a blue ADBV)

Instead of buying filters with the grippy texture.... I bought a pair of gloves with the rubberized grippy texture on the palms.

Those gloves fit all of the filters perfectly....

Gloves are great unless you can't reach the filter with your hands which is becoming more common now days. A good filter wrench cap or strap wrench is the only way to fly.

Excellent advice!

I've been using a pair of rubber gloves for years. They lose texture after awhile, so I just spray a *tiny* amount of expanding foam on them, which makes them a little sticky but gives quite a bit of textured grip.

I use gloves that are almost identical to those, except different color. They have a rubber grippy material on the end which is perfect for getting oil filters loose.

A 1987 Nissan Hardbody V6 came in for an oil change once and the filter on it was a K&N. The stupid location of the filter made the K&N nut a necessity.

Having a glove or pliers isn't very helpful with most of the filter hidden behind a shroud, and right next to the frame rail.
