You should have been staying on top of the OCI on your girlfriends car, and not waiting until it's overdue and you need to take a trip out of town. Personally, I take care of my GF's car better than my own.
Yeah, it sucks that you got robbed by the Quick Lube. But I really wouldn't expect anything less from them. I wouldn't touch a Quick Lube place with a 10 foot pole. They probably just threw your filter in the garbage, kept the oil, and filled it with bulk 10w30.
If I had a nickel for every time that I've seen a Quick Lube oil change with an over/under tightened oil filter or stripped out drain plug, I'd be a rich man.
Granted, this isn't always the case. But it happens a lot more at these places than it does at reputable independent/dealer shops.
I worked at a transmission shop in my early days and I did all the drains and refills and services for $6.80 an hour and not once did I ever think of ripping someone off. I think the people who do work like that are the people that are still going to be changing oil 30 years later.
