If you're going to have a dog, it might as well do something useful. We live out in the sticks and have two Maremma livestock guardian dogs to keep the coyotes at bay and they don't mind the cold much if at all, ours have seen many cold nights out in the barn. They bark loud and often so they aren't good in town but in the right setup they would be a good deterrent.
We've got ours to be very people friendly but I've been on farms where they aren't and they are intimidating.
