So, awhile back I asking about tires and finally settled on the Goodyear Wrangler ArmorTrac from SAM's Club.

So today I went to SAM's. Go through the initial paperwork, yes I'm the guy who ordered the tires online, etc. Tech says he has to inspect the car, alright. We walk out to it. Immediately he notices I'm one lugnut short on my passenger rear(4/5). "Can't touch it unless it has all five."
...
I knew I was one short and I was planning on getting 20 new nuts anyways, just hadn't planned on doing it today.

We go around to the other side and he noticed this:

Driver's rear.
One of the lugnuts is mostly rounded. He says his airgun can't take it off, it would just round it more. I think, "Alright, I've got a tire iron, I'll remove it and go buy two new." I get the tire iron and it slowly moves, only it's not turning, it's rounding.

So the Tech suggest I go down to Tire Kingdom(just down the road from SAM's) and have them break it off, replace the stud, put a new nut on, and then come back. Reluctantly I go to TK. I'm thinking, "Great, $100+ for a place that is likely going to rip me off to replace a part that doesn't really need to be replaced just because of this rounded nut."

I go in, I tell the Service Manager about it and then he comes out and looks at it - 1 Hour and ~$100 he says. He says they'll have to break the stud, remove the tire, take apart the brakes, take the assembly apart, put a new stud in, put it back together, put the tire on, put a new lugnut on. I sadly didn't have much of a choice so I agreed. He wrote up the work order and it came out to $99 something($99.12 I think). A tech comes out and drives the car(this is the Burb in my sig) around to the lifts and he and another guy both immediately get to work on it. There was only one other car in the shop so thankfully I got the two techs instead of having to wait.

Once the car is lifted the Tech brings over his airgun and unscrews

He just zipped the bad one right off. The Service Manager was out there at the time so the Tech asked/showed him and the Service Manager said he didn't need to replace the stud. The two techs then got their spare lugnuts bucket and fished through it for a matching lugnut. They found one after about 5 minutes. He puts the nuts back on, torques them to 120, lowers the car and then drives it around front. I follow him around and then back into the lobby(I had been able to watch him the whole time). He says something to the Service Manager then hands me the keys and goes back out to the shop. The Service Manager gets a call so I wait until he's done to pay for the work. He gets off the phone, somewhat ignores me, and then I ask about payment.

"Nope, you're good to go."

Jaw almost dropped. I was ready, albeit reluctantly, to pay the $99. Especially so knowing they hadn't really done anything, but I figured they'd charge me anyways. I was completely taken aback when he said I didn't owe anything!

I thanked him gratefully and then left.

The rest of the adventure kinda pales in comparison after that, haha. I stopped by O'Reilly Auto and got 5 lugnuts on the way back to SAM's. Put one on the empty stud and left the other four in the front seat. Got the paperwork in order and then gave the keys to the Tech. Went out to the shop with him and asked him to use the four lugnuts to replace the four worst current nuts(he found four nuts that were smaller size then the rest so he replaced those, the car literally has like 7 different types of nuts on the wheels, I plan to replace them to all 20 of one kind). He and another Tech took my old tires off, put the new on, balanced 'em, etc. Put the olds in the back of the Burb and put the new on. After about 30 minutes they were done.

Torqued to 120 with 35 PSI. Doorjamb is nearly illegible in regards to PSI. I think I read on one site that they should be 32/34(F/R). I plan on increasing it to 40(any comments either way on this?).

So yea, extremely grateful that the $100 stop at Tire Kingdom turned out to be $0 + a free lugnut. The guys there were friendly as were the SAM's Techs.

I chose to watch both services so that may or may not have affected it.

Y'all have any experience with Tire Kingdom or SAM's? Did I get really lucky or is that(specifically the TK thing) standard procedure?

If Tire Kingdom had done that for me, I would have at least let them bid getting a new set of tires. It's rare to get anything for free these days, especially more than you originally thought you'd get!

I tried giving Sam's club some business but they apparently didn't want my money. Manager stated they wouldn't do it as 15" wheels on a Beetle wasn't a valid fitment according to their book... even though it had an OEM tire & wheel size according to the vehicle sticker (albeit rare for that vehicle). DTD/Mr. Tire had no issues pretending it was a Jetta and gladly installing 195/65R15 tires on it, and after moving back to the Land of Lincoln Discount Tire had no problems rotating & rebalancing them. So, yeah, a big thumbs down for Sam's Club from me.

At least go back to Tire Kingdom for any new rubber in the future. I'd say they've at least earned the chance for more work.

Good story. Those "hollow" lug nuts should be avoided at all costs.

A lot of you don't like the european style lug bolts, but I love 'em. Don't have to deal with stuff like this.

If that were me I would have handed each tech and the sm five bucks. Even if they didn't have to do all the work it was still billable.

I also would have bought my tires right there.

I would have told the Sam's guys "bye", since they apparently don't have very experienced or skilled techs.
The problems you presented are about normal to anyone who busts tires on a regular basis.
I would have bought the tires from Tire Kingdom, since they went out of their way to remedy your problem and charged you nothing.
Remember, Sam's is Walmart, and is therefore nothing special, unless you need the orphanage size pack of oatmeal.

If you remember their names, you should contact Tire Kingdom's customer support, and give them high praise for helping you out. It might help them get a raise at their next review, you never know.

BC.

Both were friendly. But Tire Kingdom actually helped you. They tried to earn your business through a good deed...and failed.

Wow all that and you left? Did you at least tip the techs?

And don't forget the donuts, as well as a sincere apology for having bought your tires from a place that apparently uses guys about as well equipped to deal with typical tire install problems as is a chipmunk.
Bet their labor comes cheap, though.

THIS.

I would have given TK my business for the tire sale because of what they did for you. They helped you, Sam's was useless.

I hate those lug nuts. I have some like that on the cherokee and they always break.

Granted, that's probably because I replace them with Junkyard ones that does the same thing.

I have a 17MM socket (the size when the cap falls off) that I hammer on if needed.

I had already ordered the tires with SAM's so it would've been a little difficult to switch to TK at this point(unless it is customary to not pickup the tires you've ordered). Had I not yet picked and ordered my tires, I would've had TK do it.

@LT4 Vetta, they did not put a new stud on. They merely unscrewed the 4 normal lugnuts and the bad one(all five done with the airgun) and then searched through their miscellaneous lugnuts bucket to find the right size bolt. Then they put the nuts back on and drove it off the lift. I could've done that if my tire iron was the right size(it was slightly too big for the bad nut).

@fdcg27, sometimes we DO need the Orphanage size of things, haha. I am only just recently learning Wally World isn't as good as I thought growing up.

@BladeCutter, That is something I am trying to make a point to do when I get good service because I've been on the receiving end of 3 'Bad Rap' reports. Father got 3 bad infractions and was then fired from an Auto Parts Store(he was the Assistant Manager), one was semi legit but the other two were from a rude and obnoxious customer and were totally biased and untrue. My hopes are that some good review I give some time will help someone in some way. Perhaps negating a biased review.

@LeakySeals, GSCJR, fdcg27, johnachak y'all are making me feel bad

I usually only get to that area(about an hr away) once a month, so they probably wouldn't remember me even if the same guys were working that day. I've learned for the future.

I do kinda wonder if TK would've done the same had I NOT been watching. I mean, I signed the thing telling them to replace the stud so they could've easily done the unnecessary repair and billed me if I wasn't there.

I think I should add that I hadn't planned on any of my nuts(or lack there of) being a problem, so when I had to go to an additional shop I was already annoyed(not at the shop, just in general, or maybe at SAM's, haha). That whole, 'Take it in for a $50 repair and they mention the $500 one they NEED to do first' thing.

I was very grateful(the $100, while may seeming like not a whole lot, at this point it is for me when it is unplanned), I guess I just didn't think to transfer that gratefulness to a monetary way for them.

The main reason I went with SAM's for the install was because of the 'bonus' things for the life of the tire. Free rotation, balance, road hazard repair, towing 100 miles to nearest SAM's if tire fails(which with my possible long trips in the coming year may prove useful, or a complete waste).

For what I had to go through, I might rather have had my main mechanic(who is ~15 mins from me) do do the new set of 4 and then get a fifth as the spare.
Speaking of which, SAM's couldn't put any of my older tires on my spare rim because they were from 04. Tech said they can't mount things more than 4 years old.

So, this was a definite learning experience from me. SAM's = weigh the pros and cons very carefully.

We don't have a tire kingdom here, but we do buy all of our tires from Sam's Club. Excellent customer service in my experience. There is a technician there that I trust and ask for by name. My folks have bought 37" tires there for their Jeep; they have no problem installing larger tires, and have no problem re-balancing them after weights get knocked off on a trail.

We'll keep going there for tires unless they give us a reason to go somewhere else.

Lots of good, decent people here on BITOG. What goes around comes around, at least I hope so. Few years ago I needed insulated brush holders for a GM starter. Easy, you say? I couldn't even find them on eBay. Local electrical rebuild shop had them and the guy wanted $1.00 each for them. I gave him an extra $10.00 and told him to buy donuts for the staff. He didn't want to take it. Some people are too honest for their own good!

A friend of mine had the same problem. He went to Sam's and they wouldn't put tires on his mountaineer because he had bigger tires than stock so we went to walmart and they get 3 of the wheels off and put them back on and tell him they cant change the tires because one of the studs was broken on a wheel, so we had to go across the street to Midas and have a new stud put on (can't remember what it cost, wasn't much) and then go back to walmart and have the new tires successfully put on....several months later he took a turn kind of sharp and fast and one of those tires came off the rim completely! i think it was his fault for not checking the pressures and keeping them inflated properly, luckily they were able to put the tire back on, fill it up, and send him on his way.
