"I went with the Havoline."

Sitting in the shanty, reveling in the much-less-humidity-laden breeze wafting through, along with temps almost 20-degrees less than what we experienced lately, watching the CBS national news broadcast chock-full of info snippets that inform of so little but hoping to attract enough eyes to make the advertising pay all the salaries, the overhead, and, perhaps, a profit for those in a position to receive that profit, I nod my hair-covered head in agreement with your decision.

I would likely have done the same.... based upon some sordid gut feeling, a subjective decision that the Havoline may perform some function even a wee bit mo' better than the udder stuff.

Besides, what the tuna casserole, it's only a couple bucks more. 200 little pennies, 20 dimes, 8 lousy quarters. Sure is handy having our monetary system based upon units of 10. 5 times better than binary? Anything's better than hexadecimal...that stuff makes the hairy head hurt horrendously and I refuse to use it.

Good luck getting the accumulated crud removed from the engine. After the current load of Havoline is removed I believe I will switch to synthetic 24-7-28/29/30/31-365. Yep, year-round synthetic use.

Perhaps one or more of the resident sages can recommend the "best" syntetic out of all those available. The engine is a 2004 4.8L Vortec V8 Chevy bolted to an auto tranny. Towing when I rent a U-Maul trailer. No off-road use. More cold than heat to contend with. Not a "hot rodder." Not looking for the longest OCI (pesky acronyms...feel as if I'm back at FLEASWTRACENPAC before joining DesRon23, part of ComCruDesPac, and off to WesPac where we performed a FleetEx doing the ASW/AAW thing with SSNs, CVs,CGs,DDs,DEGs,and a whole bunch of acronym-laden entities).

I think I need a nap now.

Will return, akin to Dugout Doug McArthur, to peer at the suggestions for the bestest synthetic for my engine. Oh, if it matters, been using Mobil 1 5W-30 and plain boring non-synthetic Havoline 5W-30 for the past two years, depending upon climatic conditions.

Any input appreciated. Been reading the various opinions for a loooong time (lurked quite awhile before eeeeeek, enlisting to the site) but it IS so hard to make a final decision. I'm hoping one or more of the fine folks frolicking here will have direct experience with lubricating the Generation 3 Vortec engine. A Hot Rod magazine article tore a 5.3 Gen. 3 apart to see what made it tick and noted the closer internal tolerances than V8s of the past.

Okay, off to see what's begging to be eaten in the fridge.

dkcase, you have sludge, after using semi-syn and PP?
That doesn't really say good things about syn-ing, does it?
FWIW my Cherokee 4.0 has no sludge and 125+K on dino oil, Castrol and now Havoline. Oh yeah, I did ARX it.

I hope the sludge is right at that corner of the cyl. head only, due to the condensation. I did notice that it pretty much was washed away from view when I added the oil and A-Rx. I'll cut open the filters to see what I see. This cleaning phase will be due at the end of the month.

What your engine needs is 3 Hail Mary's...

Drat !

I just couldn't do it. I went to WalMart intending to get some Supertech oil to run as the rinse phase of an AutoRX application.

I had it in my hand, but next to it was Havoline at $2 more for 5 quarts. I went with the Havoline. Maybe I wasted $2. Oh, well......

This is to be for an'02 Jeep Liberty, 70k miles. I looked down the oil spout and could see sludge, and could scrape some up on the tip of a screwdriver. THe 3.7 engine has a plastic riser at the front of the engine where the oil adds, and where the PCV valve functions. It is common for it to have a lot of condensation there in the winter.

I was changing the oil after about a 6000 mile run with Pennzoil Platinum, ending with a 2000 mile round trip to Florida. Prior to that, it has run Schaeffers SemiSyn for at least 40,000 miles. THe A-Rx cleaning phase has Mobil 5000, because I had it in stock.

If you really want to clean your engine out, throw some Mobil 1 in there. I've seen some pictures of engines being run on Mobil 1; cleaner than a surgeon's scalpel.

Sniff.....

The gawds within locked my account, I am unable to alter any info, dend pm's, etc.

Why?

Well, awhile back when the demand to include one's location was broadcast I kept mine as "Earth."

My action/inaction led to some unknown entity willy nillying changing "Earth" to "Texas."

I am actually in the cultural backwater of Nebraska, surrounded by a horde of weird bizarre buffoons with a few normal folks mixed in to prevent this area from being totally whacko.

Sniff.

Texas.

Well...... after seeing all those signs proclaiming "Don't mess with Texas" alongside the paved roadways I suppose I shouldn't proclaim excessive dissatisfaction or risk facing a mob of cowboy-hat-wearing pick-up-truck-driving rope-with-a-noose Judge Roy Bean-type buckaroos clamoring to see me swing in the breeze.

remember, there's a difference between keeping an engine clean and cleaning it out.
